Any favorite all in one util app? Especially. one which Vista would have a fit over?

    Hi
Thanks for asking. Looking for two people actually. One is for me -- general defrag, optimize, etc. Also have CCleaner.
For my friend is a different story. She has very basic computer skills and think she wants something that will be Vista safe, and will do defrag, registry cleaner, disk cleaner, optimizer all in one.

Both of the apps I linked to above are Vista compatible (and XP/2000 too), and AWC just added a defrag module to their product. I don't remember if Glary has a defrag or not, but it's got just about everything else. If you need a good defrag, try this:

My 2 cents: I prefer specialized individual utilities for each task, rather than all-in-ones that are not really optimized for each specific task. If these utilities simply invoke in-built windows functions, then I'd rather just do it myself, to be honest.

These are what I use regularly in Vista:

Disk cleanup - Vista's own. Free. Seems to be good enough. Used to run Ccleaner (still do, on XP) but find that it messes up some Vista folder settings.

Defrag - Diskeeper 2008 pro. Not free. Better than Vista's defrag and better than other defraggers (especiall free ones) because it has VSS aware defrag built-in.

Anti-spyware - Spybot S&D, and I also use AVG 8 Free edition. Both free.

Registry cleaner: Never. Don't play with the registry unless you absolutely, positively have to.

BTW, that windows care program in the link a post above seems to be a beta. I'd be very careful using a beta program to shuffle my data around or touch the registry in anyway.

Always backup data regularly anyway, especially when trying out unfamiliar utilities.

    Disk cleanup - Vista's own.
Do you feel this does a good job with functions such as clean-up after a variety of installs and uninstalls of various apps?

Windows Live One Care -- a waste of money pretty much? Someone at Best Buy or some such place was trying to convince me it was such a great app.
I also have used AVG, Spybot, etc.

All excellent advice. Over the years I have learned the hard way about backing up data.

I've been using SystemSuite or FixIt since the days they belonged to Migenix, they were having a 50% off anything sale to introduce the merger of the V-Com web site with the Avanquest.com. The promo code was: NEWAQ50 but they said it ended in a week (that was on April 17) however they often forget to cut their deals off 'til much longer than they say. Worth a shot if you want a commercial toolkit. The DL includes a nearly 300 page manual in .PDF format for you to print out... The mailed version usually includes a very trimmed down guide in print format as well as the PDF. The site is http://www.avanquest.com And here was a free download that came with this offer called Quick Rename:
    http://email.avanquest.com/cgi-bin1/DM/y/nBUXZ0Xb6c70mz40Ex2Y0Ej - also worth a shot, perhaps..

    BTW, SystemSuite includes 3 licenses.

i have started using advanced windows care v2 recently, and i was wondering if anyone could tell me something about some results i got with it.

i have been having computer problems recently(but thats another issue), and AWC found some things under security i think it was. the problematic thing was that there was 2000 of them. i was wondering if that section was speaking of things i would after that point be blocked/protected against. or something my computer was actualy infected with.

i thought it would have been the first option since some of the listings were for programs i didnt even have....however, figured i would ask since i am having to resort to checking a fe things(this included) from safe mode.

    thanks for any infor.

First time you run AWC v2, it will frighten hell out of you with entries it has found. I think it is around 20,000 from memory. Don't worry about it. This is simply trying to build up its' database.

I just run it daily, with the defaults. One of my favourites. I have run it for almost 2 years. I prefer it to v3 for newbies as it is simpler. Bazza

this is what i figured, but thank you sir:-D

perhaps with something that is a does it all in one click, i am less able to take away something vital. one of the reasons something like regseeker sort of freaks me out. like hey we have found these potentially problematic entries, but uh dont do anything if you dont know better. because of course it all looks the same to me. rolleyes
and i saw AWC3 only recently, and strangely enough, right after install all it would do was pop up with some error report saying what was going on when this error occurred? so i guess i am better off with v2 anyway.

    thanks again all:-D
