Any fix uTorrent file association bug?

uTorrent has a major bug of randomly losing its .torrent file extension association (all versions after 1.7 are unstable). Un-associating then re-associating uTorrent with the .torrent extension in Windows' folder options fails.

I have no other bittorrent client app installed. Restoring my PC to an earlier date does not solve the problem. Uninstalling uTorrent, deleting all uTorrent footprints in the registry, and then reinstalling the program also fails to solve the problem. The only way I can get uTorrent to work again on my PC is to rebuild my HDD (fortunately I have a backup image saved on a USB drive). Evidently the uTorrent settings cannot be uninstalled, even by purging te registry: they are hidden somewhere, which is worrisome. I ran an viral scan, and my system come up clean.

While I have no proof, I suspect visiting PirateBay.org is the cause of the problem as there is more spyware, locking and background activity there than at any other torrent site.

Has anybody found a solution to the lost file associations problem in uTorrent?

 

This is the first I've heard of this. I doubt the Pirate Bay is the issue.
Your uTorrent profile (Unhide files and folders first):
XP:
C:\Documents and Settings \<your user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\uTorrent
Vista:
C:\Users\<your user name\AppData\Roaming\uTorrent
Delete the uTorrent folder and all the settings will go back to the default.

 

I see many requests for help on the Internet regarding this issue. I don't know if the following steps resolved the problem: I created a new user account, reinstalled uTorrent (logged in under that account), reconfigured the setup, rebooted, and deleted the new profile. Now I can uTorrent will accept the file association. I suppose some things about Windows will remain a mystery.
