I have been going thru a few distros, I like linux, alot actually im so fed up with the money microsoft wants, my only problem is im a hardcore gamer so my gaming pc stays with just XP on it but my others have been getting hit up with linux, latest red hat 9, although ive had trouble compiling software to install I still like it, fedora 1 is downloading at home right now, once I get home im going to post my gnome desktop for red hat. Just wondering what everyone else uses. So far I think Mandrake might be at the top of my list.

    Hey Wookie.

I'm a complete Linux newb, so you can take this with a grain of salt, but I've found Knoppix to be pretty good. I had some problems with internet configuration and the Forum at Knoppix.net was very friendly and very helpful. However, it turned out that I had been typing my ISP password in incorrectly, which was the reason for my problem! :D I'm a complete idiot!

I haven't tried any other distro (like I said, grain of salt), but Suse and Mandrake are on my next year's holiday list...from what I've read around here and other places, they seem pretty user friendly and compatible.

Anyone else like to chime in? Robbster12? Vlad920?

wookie! use knoppix! boots from cd means no install! no worrying about partitions!
its great to get to know the linux envoroment, you can download the iso from http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=44
    im using knoppix currently.
aslo, it is arguably the best distro for hardware support. i couldent get my wlan to work with 2 gigs of suse, but it works great with a boot cd of knoppix!

also, suse, for those interested, is quite overrated, but still cool

i just happen to be 31% done with it, on my works slow dsl but I got fedora download at home, does it run slow from cd?

no, not at all, im running it on a fairly slow cd drive in a ibm thinkpad with 128mb of ram, the only lag is when its been idle for a while, and the cd has to spin up to speed

wish I could find a dirt cheap external cdrom, my older laptop has no cdrom and I want to run it as linux only

unless you are willing to spend hours configing your hardware, the install will detect the hardware of the system that you are installing from

i dont think so, i dont know why, i cant explain it, i dont know the technicality of it, but i know it wont work, trust me, something about reading from a different source

It's possible, just not commonly supported as it means increasing the CDs' or floppies kernel that much larger to support for other file systerms.

I used to run Slackware until it went to hell in 9.X, right now I'm on a FreeBSD 5.2 box with Slackware 8.1 on another partition for Linux specific tests.

Yes indeed. Do give knoppix a try. Everyone should have knoppix on cd laying around just in case (rescue cd, etc...), and to play with, show to others, so on.

Also, remember, you CAN install knoppix to hdd. Then, what you get is basically debian, a mix of the woody (stable) and the sarge version, all hand picked.

I'm new to linux as well, but I'm studying books and websites all the time.. trying to get it right. I'm the kind of guy though who will set up multiple partitions, multi-boot. Even if I totally screw up my OS, I don't care that much, I'll just re-install, so I got that going for me.

But yeah, its SO exciting, this open source.
My Fedora Core 1 is good, but I'm upgrading from Mozilla 1.4 to the Firefox, because the former has problems doing the flash plugin, apparently.

Sometimes good things in life take some doing, some perserverance and work. I think that the Linux is like that.
Then again,..... Everything is easy once you know what you're doing, right? All a matter of having that "can - do" attitude and not letting it defeat you in the long haul... :)  :p :p :p ;)
