ok first of all you can't make dvd movie from the avi file itself, you need to convert it to mpeg one and then authorize it. there are lots of software, but it's not free, for convertening i'll suggest you to use canopus pro coder 2.0 it's makes movies of good quality and quite fast. and for authoring i used DVDLab.

There is free DVD authoring software: http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.html
It will convert avi, ogm and Matroska files and make a compliant DVD. It's not the simplest to use but it produces good results.

    I recommend Nero.
Nero 6 if you have and older system: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Nero_Burning_Rom_d633.html
    Nero 7 for newer gear (AMD64 or P4): http://www.majorgeeks.com/Nero_Premium_Edition_d2228.html
Both will give you good results without using several different apps.

it depends on what you want, don't understand me wrong i don't advertise this progs, but the converting process can take hours of time. and with canopus i converted 1.5 hour movie just on 2 hours, whereas for example TMPGEnc convert the same vovie about 8 hours. so the see the difference.

You can always use dvdshrink. You can re-author and back up the dvd.

He's making one from scratch. DVD Shrink is useful only when there is already a finished DVD.

No. DVD Shrink cannot process avi or mpeg files.

You can always try roxio easy media creator 8 suite (It has all you could want in media burning software) but it's not free.
