For one thing, newegg is out of stock. I don't know where else you might get the drive.

Did not see the out of stock part. :-o Thanks for the link to the cheaper one gman863.

I probably will get it when I build my next computer. Anytime you can put something called a 'VelociRaptor' in your box, it has to be good huh?:-D

Hmm long as it doesn't break free and eat the chips off the motherboard LOL

This drive is pretty fast and they seem reliable enough but be prepared for the high pitched whine they make as they get older. I used to have two in the same box and they were still error free but they got quite noisy after about 6 months of use and WD said this was normal so no RMA :(
I swapped them for SSDs only coz I like my computers to be seen and not heard hehehe rolleyes

Motherboard, heck . . . as long as it doesn't break free and lodge in your sternum . . . :-D

Would it be better then a like-sized SSD? I'm thinking about springing for an SSD soon, and a 250GB is about the smallest I want to go with. I've seen some that are not much more then the one you are looking at.

Edit: Now I notice the one I was looking at was a SATA II . . . the SATA III at over 200GB are around $170.00

    Hi Spad
All my SSDs (I currently have six) are much faster than the two VelociRaptors I used to have and the bonus is the SSDs are silent. My personal opinion is I would never go back to a rotating HDD for an operating system drive but you can't beat the rotating HDDs for capacity so for storage drives large size rotating HDDs are still my choice. :)

BTW my two VelociRaptors were setup as RAID 0 and were my OS drive on my games box and although not a good setup for a mission critical PC due to lack of fault tolerance they are still great for a games box where HDD errors/failure is less of an issue and fast speed is an asset.
Originally when I got my first SSDs (A-Ram and Corsair) they were A$900 per 250Gb drive and now the cost for the same size drive is less than A$250.
Check this Intel or this Samsung These are good value for Australia :-D
Currently I have six 250Gb SSDs and brand wise they are Intel, Samsung, Corsair, OCZ Vertex and an old A-Ram. The only SSD that ever gave trouble was an OCZ Petrol (purchased because Vertex out of stock) and in the end I swapped it for a Corsair when OCZ couldn't fix the problem after three attempts.;) My original A-Ram and Corsair drives are now three years old and have been running 24/7 all this time with no issues :-D My other SSD drives were purchased after the first big price drop and are in the kid's and my laptops (Win 7 boot time now only 20 seconds from switch on) and also have one in the HTPC :cool

Plenty of good brand 250Gb SSDs for bargain prices if you go looking but the 500Gb ones are still a bit pricey......... but they will get cheaper in time and I am patiently waiting ;)

Yeah it's not an SSD:-D They're also quite noisy I've had a couple 10k raptors.

Honestly Fred get an SSD it's like getting a new computer.

Thanks for the info, did not realize the SSD had gone down so much. I found a 125 or 150gig for $99. Current drive is under 100gig, and could be used for storage.

Maybe I will just print an evil looking name an logo on the SSD, just for giggles. :-D
