Any such thing as 32 bit only MS Office?

Just ordered a new computer (yay) and will install 64 bit Win 7. As I shop in ebay for MS Office Professional, one ad states that it will not run on the new Windows (Vista/Win7). All these versions and compatibilites (and non) are making me dizzy.

It seems odd to me that there might be a 32 bit only version of Office, but what do I know.

    Can anyone here enlighten me?

    TIA

    Hi Drcarl

You will be ok with Latest version and last two previous versions of Office in Office XP (Office 2002 as its know as also, while it works in the main I would not advise it as their have been issues with Outlook) and Office 2003 in Windows 7 x64 at present their is no x64 version of Office, however the next version in beta at present of Office 2010 is native x64 version.

What version of Office is it you are looking at? I would only advise going for Office 2003 or 2007 for maximum compatability in Windows 7.

HERE is a good place to check on Software compatabilty with Windows 7 as well as just asking on this forum.

Does it say what version of Office it is? Depending on how old it is, it may not be meant to run on Vista or Win 7. Sometimes though, you can use the Compatibility tab (if you right click on the icon, click on Properties, and use the tab) to allow older software to run on a newer windows machine.

Thank you for the link and the reflections. I remember now!...the Office 2007 is currently x32 and I plan to upgrade when the x64 (Office 14) arrives in 4-6 months.

I thought it pretty tricky of MS to take Outlook out of Office and came real close to buying Office Home and Student which no longer even HAS Outlook.

After reviewing the MS Office page's comparison chart here I can see that Office Standard or better is what I'm after.

Here is the ebay ad that I was referring to. I think he's just plain wrong.

What puzzles me is why Office Professional, a much more expensive program, often sells on ebay for less than the lesser Office programs. I figure that just as many people never even look for parking "right in front," perhaps buyers are not looking for the spendier suites. *shrugs*

    Thanks again,

    drcarl

    Hi Drcarl

Indeed thats whey I never shop ebay as dont trust many, even if they legit, but even the screeshot posted lists Outlook on the front as included with Office Pro, no idea on why it sells for less.

Office Standard is a good package of the main apps, just a thought as your user name is drcarl so are you a doctor (academic or medical) only asking as some employeers in those areas offer really cheap versions of Microsoft Office to employees as they have licencing agreements with MSFT, so something to look into, as I can get Office Enterprise via work (UK health service) for equiv of £8 a saving of near £600.

Office 2010 (14) x64 is very good and very zipping with Windows 7 x64 and the rework of the GUI is good, some neat touches,l running a beta release of that at present.

    Thanx, Pup..and Halo...

    I'm a chiropractor...self-employed and don't think I have any agreements with MS...lol...

I am a little tempted to run Office 2010 (14)....thing is, I kind of remember that beta programs are for people who don't care about anything else on their computer, like to reformat and re-install everything, and don't have a life. hahaaha... Come to think of it, that advice really was from the DOS days and systems are far more stable now than they were back then (I started surfing the web in 1987)

Actually, I hear that ALL programs are forever in beta :-D

    ...and yes, I know e-bay is a gamble...I've been pretty lucky ;)

I have one computer ( a older one) with xp pro and I did in fact install office 2003 and office 2007 on the same computer (32 bit) and both worked fine no conflicts. just that the office seven has ribbons on top as opposed to what your used to in 2003 , on my main computer running win 7 and office 10 which i find better than 2007 much more user friendly better and larger ribbons nut I must say it takes a little getting used to -- just my opinion

remember advice is worth exactly what you pay for it

    Hey wk990,

You reconfirm what my sweetie says: there is a bit of a learning curve for Outlook 2010 (14) especially after living in the older versions. (since, gosh, what was it...Outlook for 3.1?)

I'm OK with learning curves, especially when it's worth it and sounds to me like the jury is in, and the verdict is good for both Outlook 14 and Win7.

Can't wait for my new box to be delivered so that I can get all this going. My first computer was a Toshiba laptop which ran at 8 MHz and had a 20 MB HD!!! OMG!!! I had SIX HUNDRED FORTY (640) KB or RAM, too! The internet was expensive at something like $24 an hour, and slow at something like 2.4 kbps? --eventually 56kbps came along and now broadband...what a relief!

I have never owned a desktop and now it's time. I'll soon experience Win7 64x, with 6 GB RAM, on a SSD (solid state drive - near instantaneous access), a 750 GB RAID-1 data drive and a few other goodies.

    Office Ribbons...OK...I can handle that...

And remember, MY advice is worth exactly how much you can get out of it.

    lol

    be well,

    drcarl
