A DirectTV Parental Lock? Is there, by any chance, some universal code that could unlock it? I can't even watch South Park or Jackass anymore because they locked my TV. Can anybody help?

lol, or you could do what i did and brute force it... go through it one by one. on the hughes receiver i had it would force you to wait like 30 seconds between codes if you tried to many incorrectly so i just hit previous channel and it reset that and i tried another code right away

lol, if its worth that much to you you can probably get it faster with a friend, fedex, and a box of CDRs

South Park is the best thing on tv. period.

If by wholesome you mean the lame-ass-gonna-be-canceled-tommorow sitcoms and reality tv that are on every freaking channel all the freakin time, then no thanks. ;)

Sorry for your bad luck ERROR, I reccomend getting a divorce from your parents.
Or go buy the DVDs or download the episodes. Check out the Discovery Channel and History channel too (now that they play BOB!), there's cool stuff on those from time to time.

Well young Error....and I must congratulate you on such an apt nick btw, there certainly is an universal code to enable you to watch tv in your parents home. It's quite basic really but it seems to work for most youngsters all over the world.

Go and sit in your room and have a really serious talk with yourself as to why your parents are acting in the way they are. Are they spiteful, malicious people out to cause you mental pain and suffering or could it be they may just have your interests at heart and are trying to guide you in the best way they know how.

You wish to be treated as an adult then act as one.

Keep yourself and your space clean and tidy. Your mother has enough to do without having to run around after you at your age.

Surprise the hell out of them. Offer to help out as and when, like running errands, helping mum to carry out the laundry maybe, as was said, take your turn at doing the dishes, help with any littl'uns etc. Without expecting payment I might add.

Don't hang around with undesirables, in fact don't hang around at all. There's plenty to do in life.....and that means undesirables in your parents eyes not yours.

Apply yourself at school to achieve the highest grades possible. That means no skipping classes and doing whatever is demanded of you in the way of after school work without being chased to do so by your parents. It tends to help in later life.

If you smoke or do drugs...quit. It's not big, it's for losers.

If your given a time to be home or anywhere else for that matter, then be there at the given time.

Be truthful in everything you do and say, especially to your parents but more importantly to yourself.

Show respect and a good attitude for all persons and property, again yourself included.

Bear in mind, you want something then earn it. Your mum and dad had to.

Well there's enough of the universal code you were looking for young Error. It's now down to you. Make a start on that little lot and I'll guarantee you'll be watching what you want on tv before too long. If you don't, then I think you'll only get to see one of your fav tv progs....but you'll have to look into a mirror to see that one.

Cheer up Error, there's more to life than a tv or a pc .....and if you really think your having a hard life, take a look at some of the third world countries and see how those people live...and die.

Why are you guys tearing into this kid? LMAO seriously, he just wants to be able to watch his favorite shows.

I don't think we can conclude he's an irresponsible waste of life just yet, he's only made one post...

I dunno, you're makin it sound like he needs to take a serious look at his life before he should be allowed to watch a cartoon...

anyway, I've always been a gentleman. You europeans just have a skewed sense of reality. :p

  15. MrPewty

    MrPewty MajorGeek

His parents bought the TV and pay for the channels. If they don't want him to watch them then he shouldn't. If he wants to watch them, then he should get his parents permission, and he now knows how to do that.

  17. Rumple

BeaVeR...it seems those rolling hills are interfering with your reception...by all means, have a ball in life as much as possible....but it never hurts to take a serious look at yourself once in a while...it can help put things into perspective and even help you find a way forward through the stickier moments...now that's reality, skewed or otherwise

..you've missed the point yourself...he or she has been punished by his/her parents for something of which we know nothing about and it's not for outsiders to help him/her bypass his/her parents wishes.

I thought the advice was quite sound....as for telling him/her to divorce his/her parents...

...and as I told you BeaVeR, I'm English not european ;)

...and put that tongue away....god knows where it's been! :)

No, that's not "only" what he's trying to do. What he's trying to do is to circumvent his parents rules, which include sneaking around behind their backs and in effect betraying and lying to them. Whether it's TV viewing, drinking, drugs, sex, whatever, parents call the shots until you grow up. Which is a good thing, as kids don't have the experience or maturity to do it themselves.

The second most important thing ERROR stands to lose is his parents trust. And that can be REAL hard to put back together once you shatter it.

The biggest thing he has to lose is self-respect, if he hasn't already. Lying and sneaking are habit forming, and those habits aren't conducive to a proud self-image, or to maturing into a responsible adult.

MrPewty's advise was perfect, and the perfect solution to his problem. Of course, the right path is seldom the easiest one to take. It's only the best one.

  19. Thead

    Thead Leave It To BeaVAR!

You guys are missing my point. He asked for help getting around a parental lock, and recieved a lecture that made way too many assumptions. For one, he never said it was for punishment, perhaps his parents are just strict or maybe they put the lock on just to keep him from watching late-night pr0n.

All I'm saying is we have way too little information to give this kid such healthy serving of "be responsible blah blah" shtuff.

And fleppen, you have no business in this thread... go smoke some pot, watch vulgar cartoons and fall asleep. :D

Oh well I have to admit I was wrong........here was I thinking Thead had at last grown up.........

Thead even though others have tried to, it really is you that's way off base but your ignorance won't let you see that....another 5 yrs maybe......mmmm......

I can ignore your more personal remarks purely upon that basis...let's just say we agree to disagree and leave it at that

  22. G.T.

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

No, we got your point. Your point is too narrowly focused. There's more to the issue than just Southpark etc., and the PROPER solution is to deal with your parents, not to sabotage what they've done. Whatever the reasons.

Divorce his parents? Over TV? Childish response. If they care enough to bother with locking it, they're most likely a lot more responsible parents than most these days, which won't be appreciated until the kid grows up. They no doubt bought the TV, and pay for the service, and have control over how and when it is used. They don't HAVE to provide him with his own personal set in the first place.

  23. Thead

    Thead Leave It To BeaVAR!

DUDE it was a joke man. It wasnt a personal jab, just making a joke out of a stereotype. I'm just an ignorant, fat American, take no notice of my comments! :D (yea, that's a joke too) I'm sorry to have offended you, but loosen up man. It's a lazy sunday, browse the boards, have a friendly argument. I'm not looking for trouble, especially from someone who has been nothing but friendly to me in the past.

    G.T,

the divorce comment was a joke as well. I'm so confused as to why everything is serious and rigid here. I guess I'll do my best to hide my personality, because it's apparently impossible to interpet whether or not I'm being light-hearted or serious over the internet.

AND ONCE AGAIN I'M GOING TO SAY THIS: you guys are jumping to conclusions. This kid wrote 4 simple sentences, and you guys are pretending to have some idea of what's going on his life. While I'll admit that some of the assumptions you're making are pretty safe, there's really no telling for sure until we get more information.

True, but you have to consider all the options... who's to say that his parents locked the TV just to keep him from watching South Park or Jackass? I think it'd be fair to say that a lot of parents are more concerned about the sex and violence on TV than a bit of harmless, albiet raunchy, humor. Who knows, I'm probably wrong about that too... after all I'm just a stupid kid.

We clearly have different takes on this issue, but trying to belittle me by calling me childish and immature is pretty lame. I understand I made some "innapropriate" comments, but honestly guys, I made them with the lightest of hearts. Relax a little.

  24. Gottheit

    Gottheit General Logic

I've noticed that people are awful quick to stand atop their soapboxes lately. There's just too much hostility in this place. While my opinion on the matter doesn't really make one bit of a difference, I just think people need to loosen up and stop offering up advice people probably aren't going to take. The kid only posted once, and doesn't even know you guys. I can almost guarantee he won't come back after this. I mean, seriously guys, this is the LOUNGE. Loosen those ties, and kick off yours shoes. RELAX!

He wasn't looking for a life lesson...He was looking for a shortcut around a problem. Admittedly, his objective is nefarious, but it's unnecessary to chastize him for it. He's a kid...Let him be one. I remember how it was for me when I was still living at home. The parents were the enemy. It wasn't until I got out of there, and out on my own that I realized the error in my ways. It was a lesson that will stick with me forever. THAT was the best way for me (and probably many others in this day and age) to learn. You just can't teach respect.

Now, to get to the point of the thread. ERROR, you can't unlock it without the passcode. Simple and plain. I too, like MartyP, have worked for DirectTV and there's nothing you can do. The only way to get it unlocked is to ask your parents to unlock it for you. If they won't unlock it for South Park or Jackass, then tough titty. Go over to a friends house to watch them.

[edit: Thead...I got your jokes. I laughed my ass off a couple of times. ;) ]

I didn't call you childish, I said that the divorce comment was childish; not quite the same thing, and didn't say anything about your maturity.

As far as misunderstanding, throw in some emoticons when you're joking, they help clarify things. The poor kid might take you seriously and consider trying to divorce his folks... which would put him in foster care... which is not a good thing. ;)

Actually, your suggestion about Discovery Channel etc. was pretty good. There ARE other good things out there to watch.

I would bet there's a major split on age between the two sides arguing here. We are looking at it from two totally different positions. The only consolation for me is, I'll never change my argument. You youngsters will see the error of your ways eventually.

    And just so there's no mistake... :p ;) :p :)

Well, I have a question for ya, Gottheit: If there WAS a way around the passcode, would you give it to him? Would you help him go around his parents wishes? Especially with the lack of information that we have, as Thead pointed out? If you would help him, why? If not, why? ;)

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread. Rumple, it's SOOO good to have you back. Pewty, you always say just the right thing with the least amount of words. I'm glad you can't type, it would ruin your personality! :D GT, you always say the right thing with LOTS of words! :D

Now, I'm gonna turn on my cable, and watch whatever Cindy says I can watch....see, just cuz one grows up doesn't mean one can do what one wants without suffering consequences. :D :D :D

it have been better for Error, if the FRIST thing read by him/her was,
"welcome to major geeks"? Not a sermon on morality and clean living.
