    Hey yall,
I read most of the software posts on Major Geeks, concerning audio editing and sequencing. Before, I used physical equipment to record onto my old Acid 3 program. Now I am thinking of using mostly VST synth plug-ins, with some kind of compatible editor and sequencer.

1.Which editing and sequencing software would you now recomend, that supports VST plug-ins?

2.Do you know of good resources on the web that cater to this type of thing?

3.Do most programs (Acid, Cakewalk, cubase, etc.) accept VST's, or do only some, or does it only matter that the editor (soundforge, cooledit, etc.) support VST?

THANKS ALOT everybody, I APPRICIATE ANY HELP!

Ok... well i dont usually use soft synths at all, but i have been known to dabble. Ill try and help the best i can.

First a link : http://www.homerecording.com/ if youve not been there before, its a good place to start. The forums are great.

Most newer sequencing software supports VST, Sonar (Cakewalk), Pro tools, wavelab, fruity loops... etc. By the sound of it Pro Tools is a bit outta that question, but you can get a fairly reasonable package with a small Digibox with a couple of XLR ins for a few hundred.

It seems that Acid is rubbish for VST, so i would definatley go with a different sequencer.

    Hope this helps some! :)

Hey Bryan, the best two that I would recommend that use VSTs effeciently are Sonar [buyable] or Reaper [free and buyable]. I use both, Reaper for leisure on small tablets, etc. and Sonar for all of my real studios [I am on my 5th studio/live recording facility] Both use VSTs with very little backlash [I've never had Sonar have a problem with any VSTs used]. I've only had a couple experimental VSTs mess up on Reaper. VSTs are very cost effective ways of using synths, amps, compressors, etc., and I would recommend anyone use them if possible and if you are in the digital realm of recording. I started out using tape back in the first days of my recordings/engineering for others, then transitioned to the digital realm, using both analog and digital. For a while I got my basic tracks in analog form, then used digital for mastering, etc. Now I use almost all digital, since the advent of Aural Exciters, which put back the 3rd and 2nd order harmonics lost in the digital filtering, making it sound more realistic, like analog does. There are many great VSTs out there which do many great and needful things in recordings, like the FIR that comes standard with Reaper and can remove unwanted background noises in a recording without losing the recorded sound. [It would pay anyone to learn to use this who is recording in noisy environments like at home or out in the field.] Compressors are very needed and useful, especially VSTs , as they are much cheaper than buying an outboard compressor with the same bells and whistles that VSTs have, and do just as good, if not better in most cases because of phase problems, etc., just like digital EQs. [Analog always has phase issues.] I could go on and on but I think you get the drift.
Hope this helps. If you need any other help, please let me know, and I will get to it as soon as I can, though I don't come to the forum a lot. I have given you enough info to know where to research though, so you should be fine. The best advice is to experiment much with anything recording-wise, as this is the best way to know for yourself what the deal is.

Hi Bob Greene and welcome to the forum. :)

This thread is 12 years old and the last time the poster was on was also that long ago. I'll leave your info up in case it helps someone else in a search, but please keep the posting to the recent threads. Thanks.
