As times change and new advances are made and such I was wondering if anyone has a good FREE AntiVirus & Firewall software (individual or both combined) that they use and would recommend for others to use??
I am currently using AVG & ZoneAlarm I downloaded both from the MG downloads.

I very much enjoy using Major Geeks downloads & the forum and just want to say thank you to MG for everything...

AVG and ZA are free and probably two of the better choices.

Avast anti virus is a good free program.

I agree Avast is good but I would add that many have had conflicts when running it along with Zone Alarm, myself included.

Like you shewolf, I run AVG & ZA. At this time they are still a win win combination IMO.

Thanks everyone I do use AVG & ZA and will stick with those as I basically posted the question to see if something else had came along that was better since new things seem to be coming out more now.

    Thanks again..

Seems I recall that also and did disable it but still ran into issues with stability. Same thing happened with a friends computer. Maybe it just depends what other software you have installed/running also. As an added note, I also found AVG to be a little lighter on resources compared to Avast and for me with all the fiddling I do with graphics proggies, it didn't take much to convince me to switch back to AVG.:)

I use AVG and Kerio Personal Firewall. I've tried ZA and Sygate and prefer Kerio over both of them.

If your interested here is a link from langa.com where he asked his readers to rate their favorite firewalls (free or purchased) and Zone Alarm raced home!!!

    http://www.informationweek.com/showArticle.jhtml;?articleID=173402915

The sample size was 500 readers (n=500) and gives a fair assessment of many of the avail firewalls. Worth a look.

As an added note, there is a LOT to be said for comfort zone. Many tend to use what they are comfortable with, geeks included. Change is always hard. When i stopped using ZA for Windows firewall\hardware firewall, it took me a while to get used to :)

I go for AVG and Zonealarm. I ran Avast as well for a while but it interfered with a lot of other programs.

im using norton right now, Anti-Virus and Internet Security....they really cause my computer to drag so would it be in my best interest to uninstall them and switch to these free programs?

Viper, I would say it is in your best interest. I find they use less resources and are just as good as ones you pay for.

Like dawnpatrol, I like the combo of AVG and Kerio Have them installed on several comps and never a prob. My personal comp tho has Trend-Mircro' Internet Security (AV & FW) which cost me 25.00 p/y after the intitial purchase.

I guess I'm going against the general opinions in this thread. I used to use ZA free and AVG free and switched to ZA free and Avast free.
No clashes, no hassles on my PC's, or those I have recommended the combination to (mostly tyro PC owners).
Avast does its job quietly, no conflicts, and unobtrusively, in the background. It updates automatically whenever updates are available without any need for me to do anything.
ZA and Avast for me. Bazza

I was a Zone Alarm/AVG user until my daughter talked me into getting Zone Alarm Security Suite because we instant message a lot and it has the IM protection, plus email and antispam, ID lock...name it.
    So far...so good!
I still get online scans...Bit Defender, Microsoft Protection Center, etc. to make sure nothing's "slipping by".

I recently tried Zone Alarm but I found the programme overly fussy and complex for a novice like me (are we really supposed to know which arcane .exe, .dat etc file, is good or bad??). The plethora of (legitimate) ZA pop-ups was also annoying.
