I was just wondering as I'm 18 and have been training for around 1.5 years now so it'd be great to speak to someone else with the same interests :)

I've been trying to beef up for about a year now. I can't bench much compared to others but I am way better than before.

    Geeky bodybuilders?

Is there any limit to what a geek can do? :)

No, you were a geek first.

You can't became a geek later, you were born one. It's genetic. :)

    I became a bodybuilder after I was a geek.

Years of sitting down and eating fried snacks has really built my body. :)

Is it any wonder chicks want us, and jocks want to be like us?

So you're an undercover geek? A geek incognito?

I tried body building for about 2 years. But nothing came out of it. I guess being tall (6'7") sucks in this department. At least for my bone structure.

But, I was born a geek. Started being a geek, when I was 8. Now I'm a computer and beer geek at 32.

Well looks like you may have your first proper geek bb'er here then lads. 225lbs, 5,10" and only 18 years old :D (Not that I'm showing off at all haha).

I work out, but I'd not want to be a bodybuilder.

My goal is where I was about 7 years ago. 200 pounds, 5"11'.

Of course, I was practicing Kenpo, too.

    haha I wonder :D

You're looking pretty ripped in that photo though. Please tell me you haven't just let yourself go now, I see too many people giving up all the time.

Anyway, I'm all natural but when I turn 21 I'm taking the route of which there is no return if you know what I mean.

    This guy is my inspiration:

Why would anyone want to look like a freak?

Sorry if that offends anyone, but that isn't normal, and more than likely not natural either.

And I can't believe you guys have, or are considering steriods.

D3m3nt3d - Don't give up pal, you don't need to go straight back into it at full pelt, just take it easy, you'll work your way back in no time.

Insomniac - That guy (Lee Priest) is a genetic freak, there's hardly anybody in the world that can look like him, that's why he's a pro bodybuilder, but that's also why he's my inspiration. I always hear this response from people about bb'ers looking like freaks but I guess you either love it or hate it.

Personally I love every minute of it - the training, the diet, the results, the respect I get from people, the whole lifestyle.

And here's another picture for you if you think that guy looks like a freak then check out Tom Platz's legs haha:

You're right, it's not natural AT ALL, pro bodybuilders take more steroids than you can shake a stick at but they do it properly/safely and they train harder than anyone else in the world. It's not a case of just popping a few pills and then getting huge, they dedicate their whole lives to it.

I'm 18 at the moment, 21 is the minimum age you should take steroids so I have 3 years to read up and study all I can about them so I don't harm myself.

There is no minimum or correct age to take steriods. And there is no such thing as taking them properly or safely.

Certain diseases like MS, or a medical condition is the only reason anyone should take them.

It's your body and life. If you think that's worth risking so you can strut around, don't let me stop you.

Just don't say, or try to convince yourself, that it's proper or safe.

  15. HasSanK

    HasSanK Specialist

It's definitely not safe, there's always gonna be risks but you can minimize them by a hell of a lot just by reading up on them properly & taking proper precautions such as having a liver protecting supplement handy and an estrogen blocker so that you don't lose all your testosterone.

And there IS a minimum age that is recommended on ALL bodybuilding websites (forum.bodybuilding.com being one of them) because this is the age when the body has stopped growing in height etc. Taking steroids can stunt growth IF taken below the age of 21. There's also a LOAD of other reasons why you shouldn't take them before 21 but I'm not gonna go into that now.

Anyway, please don't get annoyed, it's my choice like you said and I'm not even 100% sure if I AM gonna take them yet. It's just something I'm looking into. Arnie took roids, he's still alive and has had little to no known steroid-associated health problems.

If I told you my qualifications, I would be accused of bragging or being snotty.

He probably meant somebody who's not into bb'ing and doesn't understand the lifestyle. It's VERY hard to explain to people that it is actually a healthy sport and that the majority of people who train aren't gonna end up like those 'freaks' anyway as it's nearly impossible unless you're one of the lucky gifted ones with great genetics such as Lee Priest.

And we don't seem to be on the same wavelength.

My quarrel isn't with bodybuilding so much, if you do it naturally great.

My problem is with taking powerful drugs, not lifting weights.

  20. Insomniac

Yeah, I did, because that's obviously done with drugs.

You don't have to be a bodybuilder to know that.

I was into bodybuilding for a while but now I'm into powerlifting, way more fun. I'm going to a bench contest on Feb.6 in Canada. I'm 32 now but everything is feeling pretty good right now. I don't do heavy squats at this time letting the old knees recuperate.

I tried bodybuilding once. Evidently Shelley's Frankenstein wasn't a good enough instruction manual, as it didn't work for me. ;)

I had a friend many years ago that used steroids to help him build. It changed his personality noticeably. He became an obnoxious jerk. Physical risks and problems, and changes in mental outlook are WELL documented. This is NOT "better living through chemistry". Ask a doctor, NOT a bodybuilder.

True. But there is there, and here is here.

HERE, we generally don't promote ILLEGAL drugs. There's a reason they're illegal. I don't have any problem with bodybuilding. It ain't my thing, but can be great. I DO have a problem promoting illegal drugs, that can have serious negative health effects, on a public forum that kids frequent. Steroids use by high school kids is already a problem. Anything that adds to that problem is NOT a good thing.

Overclocking your computer, or hot-rodding your car can be fun. But you only get one life and one body. You can't turn it in for a new model if you screw it up.

You never said you did categorically, but you certainly insinuated it several times, and said that it wasn't bad if you did it properly.

Not to mention the site is called anabolic review.

As far as doctors prescribing something, that is for a medical condition, not for bodybuilding.

  28. Insomniac

I'm not talking about the website so much, more about the use of Steroids.

If you think they aren't bad for you, go visit a hospital or psychiatric clinic and see the damage they do when they are used illegally.

Then we'll see who is shooting their mouth off.

D3m3nt3d, tell us again about your shoulder, and surgery, and how you now can't press anything. Then tell us again how good bodybuilding has been for you.

Almost anything good, taken to excess, can be bad. Working out, keeping in shape, is great, and is great for the body. Exceeding the limits that God or Nature (take your pick) designed into our structure is dangerous, and can affect the rest of your life. As in your shoulder. It will never be the same. There is some rationale for pro athletes that risk and abuse their bodies in the pursuit of big money. There's little rational excuse for doing it just to impress chicks or your peer group. The benefits do NOT outweigh the risks, drugs or no drugs.

No experience, but a friend of mine took steroids while body building, and he was stacked.

Of course, he also took anti-depressants as well to level out the side effects so he wasn't a raving psycopath.

Tell me thats a good side effect.

You can't argue that, at least not medically based.

Everything going into your body has an effect, immediate or otherwise.

Just because you didn't know anyone, or it never happened to you doesn't mean it's not possible or probable.

Apart from the medical aspect, what you are condoning is actually cheating.

Which means you also condone drugs in Olympics?

What I'm saying is taking drugs that are not legally prescribed for a medical condition is dumb and risky.

    Nothing more, and nothing less.

If you want to take them, that's your choice, but you can't say it's healthy or desirable.

You might be able to run across a busy road drunk and never get hit by a car, but that doesn't mean it's smart or safe.

  34. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Maybe. However did I mention I grew up with this guy and not once saw him lose his temper or get into a fight?

I never saw a truly bad side to him, until he took steroids.

This is a civil argument, so I will add this :))).

For those that steroids destroy their organs...was it because they were already failing? Same analogy as above, different result and side effect.

I'm perfectly ok with bodybuilding. More power to whoever enjoys it.

I'm not ok with steroids though. I mean, they are illegal, because they are dangerous. Moderation isn't the answer. Thats like saying moderating your speed intake will minimize the danger and safely increase the ability to stay awake so you can study longer.

I won't lie, I've considered it. However, I cherish the body I have.

  36. Adrynalyne

I agree. However my definition of abuse is taking a drug knowing that is dangerous to humans, and doing it anyway.

Sure alcohol could be fit in there too, but lets face it:

alcohol doesn't help your body either.

That can't always be used as a description though, as a lot of drugs are very addictive, both physically and mentally.

So even though you know it's killing you or bad for you, you are in such withdrawal and pain that it's not relevant or important.

(I know Steriods don't necessarily fit this criteria, but I'm speaking generally)
