Anyone here still play COH? I just recently purchased it last week after a month or two of hesitation and just wondering if anyone here that got the game when it first came out still plays it. I was hesitated to get it because I really waited a long time for FFXI Online to come out, it looked so good in the screen shots and magazine articles and reviews I had read for it, but then when I got it, I didn't enjoy it so much and ever since then I've been skeptical of most MMORPG's ..

Got very bored with it, they dropped the ball, very repetitive. Probably wont play again.

I disagree completely. The game doesn't really take off until you are like lvl 14 or so, but it is in no way repetitive at that point. There are sooo many awsome enemies once you progress past the gangsters, and even those aren't too repetitive during the first 5 lvls or so. Gameplay is very fluid, and very easy to understand. The menus game is a lot more intuitive than FF 11, as I did play that one for a while, and City of Heroes is just an awsome gaming experience. I would STRONGLY recommend it. Also, if you do get it, look for a team, as the game is a lot better in a group, and if you need some tanking to lvl, just pm me, as I have characters at about every range lower than 16 to help you out.

Might check my other posts on this, I am in a team, I am level 38, so I have seen 14 hoss. I have deleted other characters including level 22's. That does not count beta testing.

I think your just impressed by flying at 14, yawn. If your only at 14, you will see what I mean by 20 and leave like the thousands of us who waited for this game. The enemies are all the same except a few bosses, you will see. The missions are dumb, here is city of heroes gameplay:

    Go kill 20 bad guys
go kill 20 other bad guys
    go in sewer kill everyone
go kill 20 other bad guys
go kill 20 other bad guys
    go in office, kill everyone
go kill 20 other bad guys
go kill 20 other bad guys
    go in warehouse kill everyone.
go kill 20 other bad guys
go kill 20 other bad guys

There are only a few enemie types, all same stupid personalities, about 3 buildings to fight in, a few others all the same thing, just different layout, hell, you have not even noticed that many of the the maps are all the same with walls in the same place, even parks and the like? Bugs remain all over and so on... WoW3 is looking like they know what they are doing though.

Well, I wouldn't count NC soft out quite yet.... They have just recently released a lot of free content. I mean, it just doesn't seem any worse than the other mmorpgs out there as far as repetitvesness goes, also, with City of Villians just around the corner... I just think it is too late to count them out.

Blizzard is doing a VERY nice job with the World of Warcrack. Can't wait to make an Undead Warlock and Night Elf druid... ^_^

I agree its no more boring then the rest... too bad. City Of Villians sounds like treading water, my friends, who awaited City Of Heroes like myself, say World Of Warcraft is nothing short of amazing.

Sorry, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Hope they invested my money, because thats all they are getting. Sounds like a sham to get you guys to not only pay twice, but to believe your getting all this great new content... Which should have been in the first game, they got big balls scamming people into another.

Played CoH for a few months, beta and into retail. Lost interest. Was fun for a good while, but I also grew tired of the rather shallow gameplay.

Luckily I got into the WoW beta test and I'm blown away by it. I've played in just about every MMORPG made, but none seemed as amazing to me as this one does. They haven't done anything dramatically different. What they have done well is create a world that really pulls me into it. They have got immersion all figured out. Each area is so different than the other areas. All I ever do is quest, I never go hunting for no reason. I am constantly wandering into a new area and dropping my jaw at something new. The music, the graphics, the gameplay, it is all so wonderful. At the risk of coming across as a fanboi, I think Blizzard has a huge hit on their hands. Sidenote: I have played the previous Warcraft games and never really enjoyed them. Not a big RTS fan, so this praise comes from a non-Blizzard player.

World of Warcraft is the perfect game for me.

Sounds like exactly what I feel... I am not totally out on COH, I still rarely play, but I think part of the problem is that it is summer and I dont have the hours to dedicate to it because it simply is not that much fun... hence its at the bottom of list.

yeah, Blizzard has hit the goldmine with the Warcraft franchise. I wouldn't be too suprised to see a new Warcraft 4 or maybe a new expansion comming out for the RTS, they have pretty much put Starcraft and Diablo on the backburnners since the recent warcraft craze began.

Please remember that Major Attitudes opinion is only just that. It just so happens that he is also in the minority (this isn't a bust on him, so there is no reason for him to reply to this with the frequently-seen "No I'm NOT!" type post).
I run the largest Multi-Supergroup supergroup on Victory (Xen of Onslaught is a multi gaming guild that supports CoH obviously). All I have to do is say this (the same as the publisher only in my words): Exponential growth does not = dead.
Though I despise EQ1, it also went through people saying the same stuff. How long did that game last? No matter WHAT game you play, you will ALWAYS have naysayers.

Oh, and BTW, thats not to say that portions of CoH AREN'T repetitive, its just that ALL games have that element. Look at my favorite genre, first-person shooters. Run, shoot, repeat.

And as another BTW, I beta'd WoW and BOY IMHO its the same shite all over again.

No need for the "no im not" post, that aint my style bro. Rather, lets discuss the heart of MMORPG. You go up a level. Then another. and another. Over and over. Minority? I have no friends I know that play it anymore. Most are doing the WOW beta. I think going to WOW, which a couple of my friends love, showed my that I just dislike the whole concept of MMORPG. These games are like crack, to REALLY enjoy it, they take countless hours per day to get ot the upper levels, take you away from your family, friends and a real life. Guilds, supergroups, clans are all a smoke screen for the real world. The fact that you play EQ and love this obviously shows you love these type of games, for me, there is too much going on in the real world to waste my full days with fake friends. That was fun when I was 5 though :)

MA hit the nail on the head. I was pretty enthusiastic about WoW not that long ago. The reality is that all the MMORPGs are pretty much the same. Give you the first few levels for very little effort - high reward, low effort. That is biting the hook, then they reel you in. They start to make it harder to level, but keep trying to dangle a new and "better" reward in front of you. Before long, you need to spend a lot more time to make one level and/or get the reward. The rewards get harder and harder to get to without investing a significant amount of time.

I'm starting to come to grips with the fact that MMORPGs and me are not mixing any more. I have too much real life stuff going on for the in-game rewards to be worth striving for. The sad thing is that I have relatives and friends that play all the time. They claim to be having fun (and I know you *can* have fun) but the problem is that the level of fun diminishes and it becomes more work and I can see this in their behavior. But after you invest so much time in a character, you have a hard time leaving it (and the group of friends you have made in-game).

Another important part is that video games in general have a high level of feedback (colors, movement, sound) and they raise your expected level of stimulus. When you quit playing a video game, it can almost be like coming down from a high and you go into withdrawals. Real life seems dull and unexciting in comparison.

TV and video games are the same, that is how they get you hooked into them. You just need to keep a healthy level of real life activity to balance the video game activity. Don't get me wrong, I love to play video games. I've just started to recognize that too much of them (for me) is a bad thing for the other things in my life. After a certain point, I start to get easily irrated, distracted, my thoughts dwell towards the game, etc.

My point in this whole thing is that CoH and WoW are pretty much the same when you boil them down to the basics. A treadmill with a few rewards now and then to keep you reaching for the next one. Some are better at keeping you interested than others, but they are still doing the same thing.

Play them, have fun, but try to remember that most everything else in life is more important and often much more rewarding. I'm afraid my relative that plays MMORPGs all the time is going to "wake up" one day and realize he just threw away the better part of his 20's.

As my friends told me, I just dont like MMORPG. Some people hate FPS. Problem is, I would like to play one, but when all is said and done, they do not add much. Oh, sure they add one feature here and there, but bang for the buck, its a rip off and all about leveling up. Die hard MMORPG will deny it, yet spend countless hours just to get to the next level.

Yep i agree here w/the MMORPG is just one level above another for a doggy bone. In the WoW stress test i busted my ass day n' night to get into the WoW closed beta but failed it just one level behind 3rd place. Came to realize the game is only about the chore of leveling. Very sad that i didnt get in though! /will kill for WoW closed beta! :p Even then leveling out i think WoW didn't feel as much of a grind as other mmorpgs have. The flow of quests and quest rewards kept things out of the xp grind for a good time. That being untill there were open gaps where you couldnt really quest for 5 levels; but im sure thats because its beta. Regardless i think what WoW has done right is the never ending flow of diff and exotic monsters on and about. Not just the same body with a diffrent name.
