Anyone know what NewDotNet is?

SpyBot Search and Destroy found spyware called NewDotNet, and couldn't remove it, because "the source file may be in use". I did a search, and found it in C: Program File/NewDotNet but couldn't remove it manually either. Spybot said it may be able to remove it on restart, so I did that, and apparently it is gone, but it seemed slightly more sinister than normal spyware, and Ad-Aware hadn't detected it.

Anybody hoid of this before?

It was also called New.net.

All I can tell you is that, It is on my laptop and was on there when i got, but ad ware does not pick it up. so... I hope that gives you something. I never us it.

 

Ad-Aware did not pick it up for me either, but by the same token, SpyBot misses things that Ad-Aware picks up, so.....They are both very good programs.

Star, thanks for the link. I got the info I needed. We accidentally downloaded RealOne (stink) and that is probably where it came from.

My main concern is that SpyBot couldn't remove it, because it was "in use" but I have no idea what was running it. (We had already removed RealOne).

Anyway, it's gone now, and all is right with the world!

you will need to close all instances of IE before you can remove it (and get rid of active desktop)

Wait, becareful. I heard ad-aware if you don't have the latest edition, it will destroy newdotnet but the program integrates itself with your isp or something of that sort and your internet will be busted :-\, just update it first.

 

yes, i had this problem:

What it does (i tihnk) is it changes your winsock file, which when you try to remove it it gets corrupted. I got a program (socklock) that will stop that from happening, or for that matter it getting infected with advertizing crap in the first place.
