Try the Free Comodo Fire Wall

Make sure you wait for the latest updated program being I understand being released on the 23rd Aug 06
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Not suitable for 9x ME Windows!!
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    • System Requirements
    • Windows 2000 (ALL)
    • Windows XP (ALL)
    • Windows 2003 (ALL)
    • 64 MB available RAM
    • 32 MB of available free hard disk space

    1. The Comodo Firewall as rated by PC Magazine Online as an Editor's Choice, informing you that the program constantly monitors and defends your PC from internet attacks. It's easy to install and use and passes the industry's most stringent firewall "leak" tests. Unlike some other 'free' firewalls, this is not a stripped down version but is the full, completely functional product. This free solution comes complete with continual updates that are free forever!
    2. Download from Web Site,
    http://www.comodogroup.com/products/free_products.html
If you are going to install same make sure you “Disable” the built in XP Windows Firewall = Locate same in Control Panel, then double clicking on the Firewall Icon!

    3. If you are using the Free AVG Antivirus program you will have the problem accessing Outlook Express so will have to customise the Comodo Firewall program
    a. To overcome this you require the latest CPF version 2.2.0.11 [onwards] to enable you to add a new option of "Skip advanced security checks" to be added to the application rule's in the Miscellaneous section (This option will force CPF to skip leak checking on an application who has this option enabled.)
    b. After answering popups, open the Comobo program = Show application window…. = Application monitor =, double click on the rule for AVGMC.exe = in Application Control Rule - box = select the folder - Miscellaneous = tick check - Skip advanced security checks =. Do this ONLY for AVGMC.exe. Don’t play with parent application or with any other parameter.” Repeat application is AVGMC.exe”
    c. Your problem with the AVG Email Scanner compatibility issue is solved when user selects this option with avgemc.exe.

    Re: Comodo Fire Wall???

Have been using same for a few weeks and , yes, is one the best Firewall programs.

The Comodo Firewall is a complete Professional Firewall program and they provide the free access for "Update Files/data" for the version you are using.

I understand the program uses much less of your computer resources than other firewalls.

I am using their "Beta Version 2.3.3.33" which you can access in the Comodo forum. Yes this you will have to subscribe to! [found in the Comodo Web page under "Support" - Left click drop down menu]

Have used about 4 Internet Firewall test sites and all could not fault the Comodo program and they all show you are fully protected?????

    Hope may help

    PS
Suggest you should wait about till 23/28th August 06 for the "Release of their Version of the New Comodo Program"

Does this firewall work well with XP Pro? I tried using AZ on my new system with Pro and it bogged it down unbelievably. I'm now reluctantly using MS's.

    HI!
I run Zone Alarm Security Suite and have no problems.
I have seen many posts about Zone Alarm 'not getting along' with other programs and that may be the root of your problem with it.
Something else you run and Zone Alarm are 'not playing nice together'.
Unless you can find out what it is...A different firewall may be the answer.
    There are many, many choices:
    http://majorgeeks.com/downloads34.html
Comodo, as already mentioned looks real good.

I wonder if I'm the only one with XP Pro having trouble with ZA slowing down the system? Jud149

I currently run the Windows XP pro operating system on several of my PCs. Judging by my recent experience checking out the ZoneLabs Forum while testing ZoneAlarm Pro, I can assure you that you're certainly not the "only" person w/Windows XP Pro (or Home) having problems with the ZoneAlarm firewall...

Recently, I had this exact same problem that you're having as well; when the latest ZA free version slowed down my PC considerably. In my case, it started crashing all over the place as well and seemed to occasionally "forget" previous permissions that I'd given. Since I was having these problems using the free version; I figured maybe it was time for an "upgrade" and decided to test the latest version release of ZoneAlarm Pro.

Unfortunately, I experienced numerous problems with the pro version as well; including slowing down the system; even more so than the free version. I wrote about the entire experience in this recent Major Geeks post. As far as firewalls go; I found the ZA pro version to be the most buggy and crash-prone resource hog I’ve ever tested. Over time, ZoneAlarm free and pro versions have become bloated resource hogs in my opinion.

Side Note: I'm currently testing the Look 'n' Stop firewall (the shareware version) which unfortunately, is not free; but I'm impressed with is so far as it is very configurable, uses almost no resources and I have also noticed that my broadband internet speed has increased dramatically - up to around 45 Mbps - compared to when I tested some other "shareware" firewalls like ZoneAlarm pro.

Although it does not have all of the bells and whistles on many other firewalls; for many years prior to running XP, I always liked running the Look 'n' Stop Lite version; which is still available for download at this website and it is still freeware. If anyone out there is looking for no-nonsense, very basic but capable internet firewall, I'd definitely give this one a try. However, Look 'n' Stop Lite, even though fully featured, lightweight and very capable, does not provide application traffic filtering (the shareware version does).

Look 'n' Stop Lite is listed on several sites as being compatible with 98/NT/ME/2000 only; however I've previously run it using Windows XP and had very few (if any) problems with it. Although I have read in a few computer-based forums that some people experienced some problems using this "Lite" version after installing SP2 as was a long list of many other "older" programs which were negatively affected after SP2 was released.

    Good Luck!

I've never found a firewall that I've liked better than Sygate Personal Firewall. The only reason I don't use it is because I'm on a 64-bit system.

Have used Zone Alarm, Comodo and Sygate ....each one has been a colossal PITA ...either it screws with the intranet, screws with file sharing within the intranet, slows email downloads to a crawl, or simply makes it so the server times out ...or messes with your browser ....Have not found one that is simply capable of being downloaded, recognizing your local network, your approved applications (email, virus updates ...etc) ...If anyone knows of one that actually is workable without a two to three hour setup and constant attention to keep your system running as smooth as without ....would love to know.

I too prefer Sygate - but since they were swallowed up by Symantec last year - didn't they stop updating the free version?

I've been using ZoneAlarm free for over a year now in conjunction with Avast antivirus with few problems. It is bit of a job to get it set up properly, though.

In the last few days, I uninstalled ZA free ( no problems, but thought I would try Sygate), and tried to install Sygate. Each time Sygate stalled at the Registration screen and PC locked up (XP Pro, SP2 and updates). Could not get any reaction from mouse, keyboard, Ctrl-Alt-Delete, etc.

Only way was to press poweroff button. Tried more than once, same problems.

Stuff it, cleaned our Sygate, ran CCleaner to delete any stray stuff from Sygate and re-installed ZA free again. No problems except that I have to download a more recent version of ZA free in the next couple of days.

    Stuff Sygate, IMHO. Bazza

I haven't found one similar to Sygate. In fact, I haven't found ANY for x64 w/ program control. Ghostwall is nice because it is so lightweight, but offers nowhere near the functionality of Sygate. Its all ACL based.

Ha! Bazza, don't get mad at Sygate because ZA screwed up your system. :p (Did you give it the same clean slate as you did when reinstalling ZA?) I almost guarantee this is your problem. I've seen it happen, too; ZA does NOT like being put on and removed from a system. I've installed SPF on MANY machines now (I'd estimate 30+), and its only had a problem with 64 bit systems (LOL) and systems that have used ZA.

Heck, no! Rule of thumb: For any application that you can pay for, there is a free alternative that does a better job. Check out the how to protect yourself from malware thread. All kinds of sweet security freebies there.

This is true, but Sygate is still an amazing firewall (I should keep a running tally of machines and their infection-free status), and there really isn't that much updating you can do to a firewall's security engine. It just allows or denies network traffic. I'd like to see the release notes for ZA's updates. I'd expect that they're mostly shell/gui/functionality updates, rather than updates to the security engine. (Sadly, I can't yet find this information on zonelabs.com to confirm)

I thought I gave Sygate a fair chance after uninstalling Zone Alarm Free.
I can't remember if I ran CCleaner and other programs to check the un-install.

To be fair to Sygate I will give it another go and running my housekeeping PC programs. Bazza

Honestly, I'm wondering this myself... more and more research points me to the idea that software firewalls control network traffic by setting values in the registry keys that control your network card. I'm finding any firewall uninstallation is messy and causes problems. Sygate, ZA, Tiny, you name it... Need to find out how to remove these entries safely....

I just installed Comodo, and it's all thumbs up! I just went for the automatic setup, and not a single pop-up to deal with. Very simple and elegant. It also took care of an annoying problem I had where ZoneAlarm would intermittently access the HD every 3-5 seconds even when computer was idle - very annoying. No such problem with Comodo! I'm very happy! :)

I have used Zone Alarm Free (ZAF) for a long long time and have never had problems. Now all of a sudden with all the ZAF updates it has really messed up things with my computer. I use Fast User Switching on both of my XP os computers and I get duplicate alerts (one user takes care of the alert but the other user who is logged in when switching back to their user account has to deal with them all over). Plus I have been dealing with ZAF making my computer go into "sleep" mode when fast user switching and I can only get out of it by doing a Hard Boot (I think thats what its called) by pressing & holding the power button in to shut down the computer.

I installed Sygate and wasn't thrilled with that as I am not sure if I am protected on other users as Sygate does NOT support Fast User Switching and the icon is not in the System Tray if more then one user is logged in.

Am going to try Outpost and Comodo (NOT at the same time) and see how those "pan" out.

I really like my ZAF but its become very unstable and a PITA (pain in the A**) for XP users who use Fast User Switching. I have even went to Zone Labs forum and have found that this is a problem even in the Zone Alarm Pro and nothing has been done about this or a fix found.
