Out of the blue, when I reboot I get a "new hardware found" message. It says it's a usb device but when I try to install new drivers (which it says it found from windows update) I get the following:

Never use drivers from Windows Update. Always get them from the retailer or OEM. Much bad juju with Windows Update.

    Thanks Chicken,
I'm not even sure which device it is though and I guess it didn't come with Win2000. I just installed Windows 2 days ago, but everything was fine until now.

Well, check your USB devices. that are plugged in to see if they're all in Device Manager.

If you haven't got any or they're all there, then it's probably one of the USB hubs built in on the motherboard or similar. Update your motherboard's chipset drivers.

    Thanks Chicken,
I tried updating all 3 usb devices but got the same message as posted above. I will try updating the motherboard though. It's strange that the P.C. came with XP installed and after a fdisk and clean Win2000 install that win2000 didn't have a working driver. It's 2:30 a.m. here so I will try tommorow.
    Thanks

Huh? That's not strange at all if the mobo or device is newer than Win2k. MS is powerful, but they can't bend time.

You're right D.C., it was late and I wasn't thinking. Anyways, this morning I updated mobo driver and tried that usb device again. It says it found a driver that is a closer match, but when I try ti install it I still get the same maesage as posted above. Any other idea? I've never seen this message before.

Good call GLS, for what it's worth, all I had plugged into the usb ports was a 4 port usb hub (I previously unplugged other devices). After unplugging the hub, problem gone. I'll recheck it now but thanks for the help.

ok well lucky guess on my part :)

im assuming that hub is not compatible with 2000 maybe your just going to have to give that a miss but if youve already got 6 ports should be plenty ;)

I tried to get them from the OEM, but it's an HP a year or so old and I reformated and changed from XP to Win2000. I also paid for a 3 year in home warrenty and now they won't even give me any drivers. (got an Indian on tech support that was hard to understand and apperently there were "no supervisors there" ) and the callback I was promised never happened. Buyer beware. Never again will I buy an HP, I will build my own or go Dell. They haven't heard the last of me either. What I will say to them is un-printable here.

All Dells support is in India now so don't go with them thinking you'll get better support. I have a Dell and love it but I come here for support :)

Well, I think he means support files. Drivers, etc.

Still, now that you know the device, it should be easier to find drivers for it. I'm assuming from your post that it's an external 4 port hub? If you give us the make/model we might be able to find it.

To escape India, you better not buy a Dell.

Believe it or not, there's no name on this hub, just a serial number. I got it as a "free gift" with some parts I ordered. I also have the same problem with thr MSI motherboards built-in ethernet adapter. Would the driver be included in the motherboard driver? I can't find a brand on it (even using Aida) and a google search on the mobo's serial didn't produce anything usefull. I ended up adding another ethernet card.

Huh. It's probably better to search on the FCC ID, since serial numbers are generally unique.

Check your receipt for the ordered items. What does it claim to be there?

The on-board Ethernet is confusing, especially if you just downloaded the current drivers from MSI. Maybe the Ethernet drivers are separate.

If you can manage, plug the device into a WinXP system and see what it tells you it is.

    HP Support etc

Another strike against HP. I just wonder if they ever visit sites such as this and see the acrimony that arises when their product(s) crap(s) out. Invariably it is software support and that's a pity because the basic bit of hardware is generally pretty good. I threw my last piece of HP (an expensive scanner) into the trash and will never never buy any of thier products again.
