    I use the pro version...

...and like it alot. I haven't been infected since installing it and it came very highly recommended from people who seem to know lots about viruses and their ilk.
My only complaint is that it does 'catch' a few false positives and I see no way to make it ignore things I know to be clean.

Fastmail.fm email service uses Kapersky and I've seen it work quite well even when I check my messages via Thunderbird (or others).

But I use AVG Pro since our "company" subscribed to it a while a go. Have a preference for the later but willing to try out Kapersky standard (if it is free).

    Kaspersky Anti-Virus

I use KAV Anti-Virus Personal V4.5 because it came out as best in all the comparative tests I could find, both here in UK and in France and Spain. I like the fact that it automatically updates daily, and that you can run 'normal' scans or extended ones automatically.

Another thing I liked is when I contacted my local Kaspesky Office to question whether I should use the Personal or Professional edition, they quizzed me about my system and usage, then recommended that I use the cheaper Personal one. Not many companies would have said that!

I must also praise the help I've had from Kaspersky's Tech Support, both here in UK--where they even phone you at their cost--and in Mother Russia, who respond by e-mail. In case you think I got onto their Techies means their software's no good, on the contrary. I had run an extended scan which had 'found' a trojan on my system, and I didn't know what to do about it. It was a false positive, but it was impressive the amount of time their Techies spent with me--they also took details of the false positive, shipped it to Russia that night, and said it would be fixed immediately. Certainly, I've never had the prob again, so they must be on the ball.

More experienced geeks might like the fact that Kaspersky apparently give free Version Updates to people who test them out for them.

Incidentally, I run XP Home, Office 2003 S.B.E., am on-line 18 hrs a day, and it has kept me safe up to now.

    Hope this helps your decision.http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/images/icons/icon12.gif

RE THE SECOND PART OF YOUR QUESTION: You can use Kaspersky Anti-Hacker along with their Anti-Virus; they even sell them in the same retail box if you order both. I use thei Anti-Virus 1.5 alongside their Anti-Virus 4.5--no probs whatsoever, and its an excellent program. If you've any doubts, and seeing you live in UK, contact Ram Herkanaidu, a brilliant Techie and v. helpful guy, at ram@kasperskylab.co.uk, or at Kaspersky Lab UK Ltd.,Culham Innovation Centre,D5 Culham Science Centre,Abingdon,Oxon,OX14 3DB. Tel:-General: +44 (0) 870 0113461.Sales: +44 (0) 870 0113462.Support: +44 (0) 870 0113463 or 0870 0113464Fax: +44 (0) 870 0113465. If you cant reach Ram, ask for Lisa Clancy rather than speak to Oleg, the Russian Techie; though he's brilliant too, his English is difficult to understand.

You can download both programs from their Russian website for a free 30 day trial: look at http://www.kaspersky.com/ for details.

PS. I have no connection with the company, except as a v satisfied customer. They sell excellent programs and have the best Tech Support, both pre and post purchase I've come across.

I used Kaspersky years ago back when it was called AVP. It was small, fast, and very effective! It picked up things my friends who ran norton and mcaffee had no ideas about!
This was the Windows 95/98 days though.

Trying to run KAV on a 2000/XP machine is a damn nightmare. It has slowed EVERY system I've tried it on (and believe me I tried it on quite a few different pcs and notebooks). Actually most of the time when I install KAV on a 2k/xp box, and it asks you to reboot...the AV Monitor stalls, and therefore you cant even load the OS! You have to control-alt-delete your a$$ off to try to shut down that Kaspersky Monitor (most likely it will just crash, then windows fill finally load). Next step is to uninstall that puppy of course if that happens to you!

I've talked to plenty of people who say that well "4.0" or "4.5" or whatever newer version isn't like that, they fixed it for the newer windows OSes. Well, never been the case for me, and I HAVE tried.

Too bad really, as far as detection and removal goes, KAV and nod32 are unsurpassed. I run the freeware version of AVG now, and quite frankly I'm happy with it. But eventually I might buy nod32. I mean, nod has the best detection rate and the file takes up like 3 megs of ram!

You might have luck with KAV, you might not. I'd download the trial version to see, but be sure to make a backup of your data first, or try on another computer that's not that important to ya.

Now that I think about it, if you can find the old AVP engine (NOT KAV), and it works on your computer, I'd stick with that. The old AVP monitor was good on resources (only took about 9-12 ram I think, not bad for an AV monitor), and the update definitions should be the same. And btw, KAV/AVP is GREAT for finding trojans. Something many AV scanners neglect.

I can definately tell you what NOT to get though.

    1. Norton....bloated, slow, doesn't detect crap, especially trojan horses.

    2. Mcaffee....do I even need to explain this one? Last I heard about Mcafee was that if you had the virus shield running and opened an office document, your computer crashed. It's effectiveness imo is a step down from Norton.

    3. AVX - ripoff of AVP and not really that good

    4. Panda....what can I say about Panda. Well, it's very user friendly. So user friendly that it's impossible to get in there and tweak settings and whatnot if you know what you are doing. Also, if you install Panda, you are STUCK with it until you format your hard drive. Try uninstalling it, and your internet connection will flat out cease to work for no apparent reason. And yes, I checked all my settings, and have read many complaints about this on Usenet as well. I had this happen to me on 2 computers. Not fun. Panda's tech support took about a month to answer my queries on why this was happening, and naturally they weren't very helpful. Then last week, I get an email from an attorney who wants me to join a class action lawsuit against Panda's company. For what reason, I have no idea.

Hope I helped a little bit! Oh and if you end up getting the free AVG, and it won't let you update it, just PM me. there is an .ini file in its directory where you can add an alternate server in case the primary server isn't working. Kinda the same concept of Spybot S&D if you have ever used that.

Surprised to hear about your probs with KAV 4.5. All I can say is that I've had none on my system--P4 3.oGHz, I GB RAM, XP Home, Office 2003 SBE, and 118 other assorted apps. It doesn't slow anything down, it doesn't screw anything up, it just does its job quietly and efficiently.

I'm also surprised that you use AVG freeware. The last test I saw on that was poor(Computer Shopper Vol 192. Feb 2004) ; they gave it only 2 stars as opposed to KAVs 5. Incidentally, they also panned Panda, if you'll excuse the alliteration.

I suppose the most important thing is to use something you feel comfortable with, and which gives you the level of security you feel happy with. It's also good to read other people's experiences, which is why I found your post so interesting.

    Take care, Omigosh.http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/images/icons/icon7.gif

I've been using free AVG for a while now, haven't really had any problems. Then again, common sense is the best antivirus tool.
