Anyway to disable/turn off ICS?

Hi!

ICS is driving me berzerk!

I want all of my network connections to be set up as direct connections to a hub and this is what I select inthe network wizard. Sometimes I get an error that wizard cannot complete. I have turned off the ICS/ICF in services and disabled the standard and the IPV6 version.

Yet not matter what I try I still have an Internet Gateway showing up in the network connections. If I disable it nothing works. Bah Humbug. What am I missing? Could I have a virus/trojan/etc? I have run SPYBOT, MCAFEE, etc. and not found anything.

I guess if you tell me it can't be turned off I could learn to live with it...... If it can then please share the secret!

That is the weird thing about it... I don't see the "allow other computers to connect thru my computer check box" on any of my systems and yet I am still inflicted with ICS? Any other thoughts? Is my registry screwed up?

Well, with XP SP1, you can just stop the ICS service:

Click Start, Run, then type "services.msc" (without quotes) in the Open field and then click OK.That will bring up the services list. Under local services, in the right pane, will be listed all the local services. Scroll down until you see "Internet Connection Sharing".

Click the Stop button. That will stop ICS. To make it permanent, set it the Startup type to either Manual or Disabled.

Note that with SP2, the Windows Firewall is part of ICS, so doing this also disables it as well, so if you upgrade to SP2 and want to use Windows Firewall, you'll have to undo this.
