AOL drops wireless network every 5 mins

I have a brand new Dell Laptop with Centrino internal Intel(r)Pro/wireless Network 220BG connection (Centrino is apparantly not supported by AOL). I get online to AOL using a Speedtouch 570 router. Without fail AOL drops the connection to the router every 3 - 5 mins. AOL tell me the adaptor is the problem and not their software. Though the wireless network connection is still showing as excellent long after AOL has disconnected. The AOL error message is "your AOL service was interrupted (24-01-08-041)". Has anyone any ideas how to resolve this issue?
