    Hello people @ Major geeks...
This is my fist time here and the site looks wonderfull

    My problem .. ..

    (laptop1) (laptop2) --- (New ADSL Modem/Router Zoom X5) ----- Dsl enabled line
I am using AOL 9.0 as my DSL service provider, I have a BT line that is definatly DSL enabled (I was using a single USB broadband modem for ages on it) The new X5 Modem/Router appears to be working (I can get the statistics from it and the online status tells me im up and running) Both laptops are running xp and are pretty new.

I cant get AOL to talk to the modem AT ALL! It keeps saying that its searching for aol servies using TCP/IP then tells me that it cant connect to the dsl service. Either using the ethernet cable or the usb cable (software that came with the modem/router is all installed and looks fine)

As far as I can tell I have switched any firewall stuff off but the X5 does look to have some kind of hardware firewall thingy inside??

Is this possible to get working ?? Am I being Stupid !!??

Any Advice would be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED !!

    Psy !

I was under the impression AOL doest allow you to use routers because they dont want you having more than one computer on a connection, maybe thats the problem?

    Thanks Timeshift,

Aol never used to allow home networking of broadband but now they are actively advertising the service. (not for cable modems though).

However I have just found this from there website .. ..

    * AOL currently support only the SpeedTouch 510, 570 and 545 routers from the Thomson range, however we are working to increase our list of supported products in 2004.

Does this really mean that ONLY those routers will work ?? I though that when it cam to hardware the gubbins inside were generally the same just different branding?

    Like I said I have a Zoom X5 Router/Modem ?? Is it workable ,, ?

    Ok Guys and gals ..

Just spoke to AOL tech support and they said that YES it id definatly possible to connect various different computers through a router to the aol service .. The guy was nice but said what I expected to hear "we do not support that type of router" However he gave me some tips such as makeing sure i had typed my aol username and password into the routers info screen and then sent me an email cotaining bits and peices..

At least I know that it can be done. I still cant get aol to 'talk' to my router, it searches for connection from tcp/ip the line light flashes on the router but aol then sais no dsl service detected or cannot connect to.. ..

Any ideas ? Im gonna keep trying various things but its just kinda stabin in the dark .? Does any oe here have a adsl zoom X5? are they any good ?

    UPDATE :

I have now got it to work a bit better, instead of saying no dsl service present it now gets further on the sign in screen (connecting using tcp/ip) but then times out after no activit for about 1 min. Spoke to the tech guys again and now they are saying that I am definatly connected to the aol broadband isp and the problem is with my router ?

Why a i connected to aol but cant sign on ? they also kept goin on about if I could get any pages open using internet explorer ? I think im gettin it but that indicates to me that its a problem with my network settings not gettin the infor from the active connection onto my puters screen ??

I will keep posting here but if any one could help with a tidbit of information ( I havent got a clue what im doin) then please feel free to jump in and help . .

That's strange .. I'm able to run AOL through a router on a cable connection. I'll ask around for you, maybe somebody I know has the solution to your problem. If you figure it out yourself, post it up
