I use AOL. Not out of my personal choice, but at least I am getting the internet free. I removed all but the most basic of AOL software so I can connect to the internet.

I removed the AOL Spyware removal stuff, but a window still pops up on my PC, and says it has just completed a scan. There is nothing to remove in the Windows control panel.

When I watch Ad-Aware, I notice it shows the file it is scanning, and if the AOL software does the same, I do not want them compiling a list of what is on my PC.

I am concerned that AOL is going through my PC's contents. I do not like the idea of this, seeing as how I have intricate knowledge of the secret alien plans.

Anyone know how to block this, and if AOL is viewing the contents of my PC after these "anti-spyware scans"?

http://help.channels.aol.com/kjump.adp?articleId=220683 but if you removed all this then you should be ok.

These programs, or in Ad-Aware's case ( or even Antivirus applications ) as I do not use AOL, do not phone home with the contents of your PC, they just generally log the files they deem as nasty, but the logs can be deleted, but if your paranoid about the contents of your PC getting out then being on the internet is the last place you'd want to be!

When the program starts to run I believe there is a little box in the bottom right hand corner, click on it and tell it not to check your pc, it has been a while but I believe it was called spyware zapper when I used it. If you use a decent free firewall, anti-virus, and spyware scanner you may want to try version 8.0 (available at www.oldversion.com among other places) and then remove 9.0.

There is no warning. I just see a box saying "Spyware scan has detected these items" after it completes the scan.

Just how much can people see on my PC?

I got a firewall with in/outbound prog. alerts, AVG, Ad-Aware, and just to be safe, every once in a while I smack it around good just to let it know who the man is.

If y'all can see my computer's contents, I look better in person. I think...

Just finished reading the AOL FAQ you posted, there is nothing in the control panel to remove. I might have to downgrade the AOL, like that matters.

    YOU GOT MAIL!

    "Yaaay!!"

  6. Open AOL

    Click 'Keyword'
    Type in Spyzapper

Check the box that says "Do not check my computer".

Or if you really want to do away with AOL completely, just uninstall it and then manually set up an internet connection **. (on XP it's Network Connections in Control Panel). You can access your emails by going to the AOL website.

How do you get AOL for free ?

** let us know if you need to know how to do that. :)

Great googedy! If I knew how to get AOL off my PC, I would have done that long ago!

I am going to try that now. Just in time to try out my new hammer and blowtorch.

Someone else is paying for the AOL, because they refuse to change.

    Not my fault.

On second thought, I could really use some info on how to connect directly to AOL from firefox, rather than what I think I am going to do.

    Please go on.

  9. Control Panel
    Network Connections
Under the left hand column, Network Tasks, click
    "Create a New Connection"
    New Connection Wizard opens. . . .
    Click Next
At next box that opens, check the 'Connect to the Internet' box
    Next
    "Getting Ready"
Check the second option, "Set Up My Connection Manually"
    Next
Choose the relevant option (dial up or broadband etc)
    Next
Type in your ISP name. In this case it will be AOL Broadband, although you can type in anything you like, it still works.
Type in your username and password. ** username means complete username as in your main email address which includes @aol.com. (if you miss the @aol.com it will not allow you to log on)
    Next
Click "add a shortcut to the desktop"
    Click Finish
    The login screen will appear.

Once you're got this connection up and running, you can uninstall AOL by going to control panel, Add or Remove Programs.
