apostrophes vs quotation marks

hello.

recently the apostrophes (') i've been typing into ms word come out as quotation marks (‘)(’) instead. is there any way to change this?

A couple of questions here...

Does this happen all the time or just intermittently? Also, have you noticed whether this same problem has occurred while using any other applications like Notepad or Excel? If so, it sounds like your keyboard (or perhaps just the individual apostrophe/quotation key) has become damaged, dirty or is otherwise somehow malfunctioning for some unknown other reason.

There are two things that I can think of in order to determine if the keyboard is actually the ‘culprit’
(1) Test if this is happening while using other applications for a while to see if the dysfunction continues
(2) borrow someone else’s (or use an old) keyboard and test it for a while to see if the dysfunction continues.

If it does, it is likely either a "bad key" or keyboard or the keyboard is dirty or has somehow been damaged. If it is a "wireless" keyboard/mouse; try changing the batteries. You should also 'check the plug' that goes from the keyboard to the back of the PC box to see if it is loose or the input plug is damaged or has been tampered with somehow (even a little damage can cause this)..

Note: You also might try updating your drivers for whatever mouse and keyboard that you are using; from the website of the keyboard/mouse manufacturer.

apparently the problem persists over all fonts and programs except notepad. it's been happening every single time i use the apostrophe key since (as far as i can tell) i replaced my keyboard (Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard 5.1.2600.0).

any way i can solve this or remap my keyboard so the apostrophe key is produced instead?

You might want to check what langage your keyboard is set up for, sometimes this effects the mappings

 

i've tried switching between several keyboards and varieties of english; nothing has changed. :/
