Apple I Phone Wi-Fi Issues

The son just bought an I Phone and the wife got a I Pod for Christmas. Originally, I had the Wi-Fi network unsecured and unplugged most of the time but that did not make the head honcho of the abode happy when she decided it was time to check the weather. In this unsecured state there was no problem with network access on any Wi-Fi device.
I secured the network, simple Linksys Home Router, and all devices attached when the proper ID was entered. However, the I Phone was not able to connect after about a week. Basically, it just decided to stop cooperating. The I-Pod had no issues. Did a web search and followed a few suggestions. I shut off the Network access to the I-Pod, tested the I-Phone to see if there was any interference between the two with no change, went back to log the I-Pod back on the network and then it too would not connect.
I removed the Network Service on the I-Phone, went to reconnect to the network, Hang 'em High for those political types amoungst us, reentered the password and it reconnected. Went to do the same to the I Pad but it was already connected so I have to assume that whatever the hang-up is is related to the I Phone.
My search indicates that this is a problem for Apple but there is minimal info on it and wanted to ask within this forum to see if there may be answers to explain it that I have overlooked.

Reboot modem and router, and all other devices. Also make sure that the SSID is not disabled or hidden. Also, keep the WPA/WPA-2 key short around eight characters.
