Apple or PC - advice for my son

I tried to find this for about 20 minutes so I decided to go ahead and ask myself. Sorry if it is somewhere else. My son, 18 years old and going to college, wants to buy an Apple laptop. I know nothing about Apple, but I know he wants the free iphone (that's frustrating). What is the difference? and what are the disadvantages to an apple? Would he be happy with it? Advice please!!!! Is it true they don't get viruses and is that temporary or what? Thanks so much.

 

well its all personal, though me personally i do want a macbook pro. They dont get virus as easily since its now windows and has a decent architecture to it, hes going to college and Macs are popping up more and more on college campuses. It all comes down to going to a apple store or something and let him play with one and see if it likes the os layout and all that. just my two cent though

If you are looking for a cheaper computer than you can easily afford a PC! Though it's not the best on the market, it's very useful and reliable for basic operations (presantations, web browsing etc)
If you are looking for a computer in which you can run (even create) programs, designing, photography and gaming for example, you would have to spend more money. If you are willing to spend more money ~ than my choice would be an Apple computer.
Why? = well, you are right when you say no viruses! I would add more, like no spyware, and no silly Windows registry! Rather than spending $$ in antivirus software in PCs (WinXP, Vista) you can spend more in buying a better Mac and enjoy the performance and not the hussle of installing and scanning your PC for viruses !

Anyway, it's only my opinion ! cheers

 

Disadvantage for Apple: cost.
Will he be happy with it? If that is what he wants, yes.
Never get viruses? Not true, but certainly much less likely to get them - but if one practices safe computing they usually avoid them no matter what computer brand/model they use.

I have used both and both are nice. I stopped buying Apple computers only because of price. Good computers for sure, but so are the HPs, Dells and other PC brands.

Ubuntu will be the best for collage work it comes with online programs and open office
and its completely free (thats good)
i was going to buy microsft office 2007 but it was over priced and buggy
i installed ubuntu and it has helped with my school work
if your choosing an OS then linux, vista/xp for games and mac is for music editing and ect but a mac is not a cheap option so windows or linux.
Linux also has a downloadable program called wine witch can ran some windows programs
