I have a panasonic Lumix DMC/LZ7. I haver taken many movies with this camera and have them stored on my external high drive. they use to play well on my dell demension 4500. I had a problem and Dell deleted everything from my computer and then reinstalled everything...windows XP. didn't notice right away that I didn't have Quick time.... so reinstalled from the disc that came with the camera. The movies act like they are going to play, but then stop ...the sound goes on, but the picture is just a still picture and may changet to another frame after a while...the sound is correct. Called and was told to update Quick time...so i uninstalled and the reinstalled Quick time from the web site.... same problem. Called Dell and they said everything was ok. tried playing movies on realtime and they act the same way. took new movies with the camera and they look good when I play them back on the camera, but react the same way when I download them to my computer and try and play them..... I am at a lost. have tried Panasonic, but they have not returned my call with an answer. Can you heklp me.. olease! Let me know if you need any additional information. we are leaving on a trip and I want to use my camera for movie clips of different things. Like I said everything was fine before I had to remove everything from my computer.

Thank you so much for listening...as yo can tell I don't now much about computers...an old lady who loves my computer and my pictures and the movies of the grandkids,

    Hi

Possible is that in the re-install of XP that yoru graphic card drivers have not been installed and are using defualt drivers, this can affect video playback.

So install latest driver from Dell for your graphic card, I know Dell in many PCs of same model number, use various graphic cards so download and run this small free application EVEREST and when installed and run, goto Computer > Summary and under Display and next to video Adpater it will tell you whats installed then goto the below site and get the drivers for the model of card.

And dont forget to install the Chipset Driver as its the one that will cover many of those with Red X, do this one first before the others.

Is there some place I can go that they will walk me through this step by step or can control my computer and do it for me?

    Thanks, Judy

    Hi

With you mentioning red x's please check this for me, Right Click My Computer and choose Properties, then click the Hardware tab and then Device manager, do any items have a yellow ! mark or red X by them?

But seems to be that some drivers are missing and graphics driver can cause poor playback in video.

Download the Intel Driver from the DELL Downloads Site, and its an EXE file, double clcik it to extract and run the download and step by step instruction is here http://support.dell.com/support/dow...-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=27&fileid=48256

What the chipset drivers do is to add the driver support to many of the motherboards hardware as in Audio, USB ( eg. Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7 ) etc and allow many other hardware onboard items to be correctly ID's by the OS so again drivers for those can be installed.

The install the Graphics Driver Joelz linked to above,

Also is your Windows XP fully upto date with SP2 ( Service Pack 2 ) and current updates? can see what Service Pack you have by one of many routes but Click Start > Run > and type winver then hit enter. Everest will also tell you this by clicking Computer and Summary and it will be near top, or clicking Operating System.

As for someone taking remote access of your PC, then DELL can do this, as you mentioned in your 1st post DELL deleted your PC and re-installed Windows, why did they have to do this? also did an engineer come out or did they instruct you on how to do this?

the only thing in yellow is USB CONTROLLER Dell tried to check that, but nothing I disconnected would make it go away. i have a printer, an external hard drive or memeory, a nero DVD burner, an external modem for my internet. and then I down load photos thorgh a USB port.

    Thanks, Judy

    HI

No not scared me off, likely I'm in different timezone being UK so will be online at different times.

USB Controller will be cured likely by the Chipset Driver, unless the motherboard has a 2nd set of controllers.

Have you installed the graphics driver yet? as those are most often than not likely suspect to a jerky and poor playback on video.

As you only mentioned you installed Quicktime "from the website" I wouldnt know what website so if it was not Apples then do update Quicktime from here http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

If your computer is a Dell Dimension 4500 desktop, go here
    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...D=DIM_PNT_P4_4500&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
    there are 86 items.
Download the following: CHIPSET driver and
under video, the first thing listed. That's it for the moment. Two things to download.
If the Dimension 4600 has a letter behind it or is not a desktop, don't download anything. We will need to search again for the proper drivers.

Note to Halo: Everest indicates this 32MB ATI Rage 128 Ultra yet her model of Dell doesn't show anything like that. Is the top driver the one she should use?

Judy, don't install anything yet. Just download those two things and put them in a folder on your desktop.

    Hi Judy

I'm not certain what was meant by the comment
I think it was refering to the listing report given by the program Everest. Having never used this program myself, I can't be sure.
In any case, to reinstall your video driver I would first uninstall the old one. To do this go to your device manager.
    start>control panel>system>hardware>device manager.
Double click where it says "Display Adapters" and finally right click "32MB ATI Rage 128 Ultra " and choose "uninstall".
Once that is done the computer will probably tell you to restart in order for the change to take place. Do so.
Once the computer has been restarted you will be using what is called "default drivers" for your video.
Now install the newer driver by running this program:
    http://ftp.us.dell.com/video/R41232.EXE
this should automatically install the newer driver.
You can make certain that it worked by going once again to our device manager and seeing what it shows under display adapters

I had called someone to help with my computer problem. they said to bring the hard drive to them. but before I bring it to put a couple of Quick time movies on the hard drive from the external hard drive. when I did this they played well..... when I disconnected the external hard drive and reconnected it.... it said there are no hi-speed USB host controller installed. need to *** a hi-speed controller to this computer to obtain maximun performance.

I have a My book for the external hard drive. western digital bought at best buy.
    Model number WD 16001032001.
I can not remember a cd coming with the device..... have looked and can not find one.

Does this help with what you think I should do?

Thanks,,, must leave for a while will check for an answer later.

This may indeed be the crux of the matter.
If your movies are on an USB 2.0 external hard drive, and your computer is trying to access it through a USB 1.0 hub the result will be a slow and uneven playing of the movies.
Windows Service Pack 2 (Also called SP-2) has the higher speed controller in it.
I know you said that you had SP-2 installed, but when Dell reinstalled your Windows XP, did they reinstall SP-2 too?
If they didn't, you should download and run this Service pack.
