    Folks
a year or more ago I found somewhere a handy little applet that would dive down and figure out exactly which/what DVD & CD drives you had... like instead of a generic id it would come up with the real exact model.
anyone know what this is? I can't find now...

Right-clicking 'My Computer/properties/dvd-cdrom gives one the exact model(s) you have installed along with info on drivers I haven't heard of a specific 3rd party program that does this better but hey, I don't know everything.;) There probably are a few out there for some reason.

yeah... that function only reads the software/firmware and for some reason its not "seeing' this one.

NeroInfoTool. I'm not sure where I grabbed it from because I do not have Nero installed but I do have a nice printout of the two optical drives in a computer built for me. I needed to check the firmware versions and it gave me that plus lots more.

    Found a version right here

yep, its there. no bangs or anything.
I'm just lazy... the same unit was in an HP DC7100 and it showed full detail.
I move it to a dell optiplex, and it just shows it "CD ROM", which isn't even accurate, but it is not an "error" as Windows would tag something 'errored'
    wondering why.
the firmware is up to date... and should not have mattered anyway.

back to the original request... maddening. I had some sort of widget that worked gloriously well, and now I cannot find! aargghhhh

i'll try the nero tool. gee whiz.. that's another topic.
I loaded up Nero 8 a couple days ago because it was packaged with a DVD RW i just bought... it just about locked up my system! yikes.
what are those guys doing? its like the ever-growing bloatware blob.

Edit: hey, plodr you win the gold star~!!! worked like a charm! yeah baby
