applying atributes error

I have a laptop hard drive out of a phone/voicemail system. the drive is almost dead. I am trying to make an image of both partitions so I can get a new drive, copy the image onto it and put it back in the old system. the reason I cant copy all the files using windows explorer is the labels/names of the folders in one of the partition of the drive are not english/unknown font. So it will not copy those files, when I try and change the attributes i get the error :

An error occurred applying the attributes to the file:

Y:\VM\a(string of special caracters like the division symbol and a check mark)

I am using windows 7
please help
