    Morning,

I have been having odd problems, first I thought it was a malware problem, but the malware forum redirected me to you as clean.

I have a dual processor pentium 4 pc, with ASUS motherboard and Nvidia Gforce 6800 GPU, running Xp SP2, not fully updated (I cant).

    Problems are:
    - I start working, some time goes by, then I open an app or try to update an internet window, and it seems to be doing it but never finishes.
    - After that first fail, all other apps start blocking when asking them to do anything, and the internet conexion seems to be dead. You cannot even exit windows properly.
    - Sometimes the system shows a windows saying it will auto-restart in 60 seconds because services .exe failed.

After I was assured I had no malware problem, I repared windows installation. It seemed to go ok but the problem is still there.

It is urgent to me, thanks for your help.

I had a memory module (RAM stick) failing recently and it was causing sporadic errors (fine for a week then 3 apps suddenly stop working) but basically a lot of apps were becoming corrupted and disfuctional. I had at least 3 significant OS failures and had to use the repair registry and get to an earlier Recovery Point.

A way to test this is to use MemTest86, do a google and locate this app, read the home page and try this out to start with. Basically it will test your memory modules independant of the OS and help to id a potential hardware failure. If a refrence address (hexidecimal) is impaired or failing it can lead to transcirption errors occuring and lead to the corruption of data and apps.

Do you get any other error codes with the shutdown window?

The window says Nt Authority/System has to close the system because ../.../services.exe failed, nothing else as long as I know.

In a pair of times I haver received a message saying "the command (Well I get the message in spanish, i'm not sure if that is the translation for "instrucción") 0x0162153 makes reference to the memory in 0x43007069. The memory cant be read".

I will try Memtest 86, and post a reply thanks

When you did the repair did you use SP2? How did you do the repair? Maybe try using another browser to see how that goes.

The version of Xp I use (Came with the pc) includes SP2.
The "repair" consisted on reinstalling Xp without deletting any of the previous files.
I have been using both IE and Firefox, with the same result

Why can't you get windows updates?

It seems like a high download rate trigered the problem, and the updates cant end.

Checking the events viewer I find several errors like this:

    Origin: Service control manager
    Tipe: Error
    User: Not available
Text: The service Appitt could not start due to the following error: The system cant find the specified file.

I guess this could be of help.

What you could try to do is replace the "services.exe" file via the Recovery Console, sadly how to actually do this I can't think of off the top of my head but if you do a google or someone else can explain the method. Worth a shot.
