Are all registry defrag programs the same?

They just defrag the registry hives and/or the page file, right? No optimization of the kind regular defraggers do for other files?

Do they all perform the same: Auslogics Reg Defrag, Sysinternals PageDefrag (when I run Scandefrag), NTREGOPT (from ERUNT package), IOBit Reg Defrag (came with ASC3),... ?

I ask because just today Auslogics has updated its version once again (saw it here at MG), whereas NTREGOPT and Pagedefrag haven't been updated for years?

    Which is best?

    Hi

No not all are the same, many of the freebies just use a Space defrag method whereas some of the retail ones like O&O Defrag Pro and Diskeeper Pro use multiple methods from Space, Access, Name, Modified etc methods to defrag as well as enabeling auto defrag to boot-time pagefile defrags.

Sysinternals pagedefrag is different as its just defrags the pagefile (swapfile) whereas Auslogic and IOBit do the whole HD but may not be able to defrag the Pagefile as its a system locked file.

For Freeware a mix of Auslogic and Sysinternals PageDefrag is good, but if your filetype is NTFS you shouldnt need to defrag too much unless you're installing and uninstalling daily... maybe every 3-4months, even though I have O&O an its auto defrag works a treat and I do a full defrag maybe 1-2 times a year at best.

Some dont touch the swapfile or registry at all in depth, which is why registry defrag apps have popped up, although the registry is not really that big and fragmented for the most part.

I realize defragmentation utilities differ in their quality and capability, but I was wondering specifically about registry defragmentation utilities.

If you want to work on the registry - there are two safe things you can use.
CCleaner will get rid of all the broken links, orphans, etc. and will always ask if you want to save a copy of the old registry. To that question, you always say YES[/]. I save around 3 or 4 of the newest CCleaner backups then I start erasing the older ones.
    NTREGOPT will compact your registry.
