Are Internet Relay Chat Channels Safe?

    I know that people are using IRC as file sharing services, and I'm curious to join on. I've never downloaded file sharing software because I keep hearing that it's not safe. And there are horror stories of innocent people having very illegal material put into their computer through file sharing software.
    Are IRCs similar? Would I have to worry about spyware, viruses, and any other junk?
