Are Laptop Internal DVD Drives Universal ?

I have a Gateway laptop. The specific model name escapes me at the moment. However, I think it needs a new DVD drive. Before I begin narrowing things down, I wanted to know if laptop internal DVD/CD drives are universal in size. Or, if there are a few standard sizes. I am hoping I do not need a specific model as I would like to shop around for a deal.

Ooops, listed HDD info, not DVD info, so ignore info shown last.

Still using Everest, go to 2nd thumbnail for info on DVD fitted. Not nearly as informative as the info Everest provides on HDD, though. :cry

IGNORE THIS. Sorry, but it might help others so I have left it in.
Nearly all laptops have 2½" hard drives but some may be IDE, some SATA, and the latest could be SATA2.

If you don't already have EVEREST installed, download it from
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
and install it.

Check out my thumbnail on how to find out your laptop specs.
Mine shows as Hitachi 2½", 60 gigs, and SATA, for example.
