Okay, anything within $blahblahblah$ is okay to delete, just be sure to realize these are patches to windows. If you delete these files, then you can never remove the patches. Basically, these are backups of the patched files.

I typically delete mine. So go ahead. Unless you downloaded IE7 beta refresh. If you delete this $*$, then you can't revert back to IE6.

thanx for that little bit of info...^_^ ive always hated it that IE popped up if i needed to do an update..do u by any chance kno how to make firefox the default browser that opens when that link is clicked form the start menu??? firefox is set as the default browser, but it still opens IE for the update page...

Unfortunately, that link points to -----> %SystemRoot%\system32\wupdmgr.exe

Which forces a windows update via IE.

I have a quick habit of just typing out update.microsoft.com within firefox, which automatically switches to the IE engine within firefox.....via IE tab options "*.microsoft.com"

Typically, I never use that start menu icon to update windows.....

Do you do regular PC housekeeping? Try all 3 below. In this case 3 is better than 1.
    Download/install and run all 3.
All are free and don't conflict with each other. Each finds stuff the other 2 miss.
    Cleanup! www.stevengould.org/
    From MG thread 67852—BWM—18/07/2005.
For ages now I have been recommending Cleanup! from http://www.stevengould.org/
(It works well, FWIW), together with
    CrapCleaner, aka CCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4191
    and EmpTemp http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1575 ,
as a 3 pronged attack on stuff accumulated after every net session.
