Are they not selling the OS media with new pc purchases anymore?

My mom called tonight and on her Toshiba lappy less than a month old they are going to have to reinstall the OS for her. I told her, no problem, fire that CD in and reinstall. She said they sold the lappy to her without the CD and said that they do this for all new pc/lappy purchases.

Is this true? I ask because at work all our recent purchases, even just a month ago, we got the OS DVD.

Depends on the type of purchase, but many systems on first boot say burn this recovery cd, and dont ship media with an os on it. Seems pretty common with systems i see.

Or they have a recovery partition. My Asus laptop has the software to burn DVD's (but it contains all the bloatware and insanely uses 3 DVD's) or I can use a the recovery partition.

you pay say, 1000 for a new lappy because you like high end stuff and they aren't going to give you the Windows CD? Even though you have a license key sticker on the underside?

    That's a fecking ripoff.

It's been happening for years for home users, business buyers usually get the discs or pay $5 for them as an extra. It really pisses me when you have to spend 2-3 hours cleaning the pre-installed dross and creating discs before it's 'safe' to use.

Netbooks are similar, some come with no Recovery partition and a CD/DVD, of course, there's no CD/DVD drive in a netbook - what's wrong with them supplying a bootable USB stick with the OS on.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

And, from what I've read in the past, this has nothing to do with Microsoft: the absence of OS media is strictly up to the machine manufacturer as a method of reducing wholesale costs...

If that's the case, Toshiba can royally get to feck!

I have been buying Dell and HP comps lately and they come with the media. May stick with them for the forseeable future.
