If work related and addressed to me and CC to others, then yes. If work related and addressed to many and me included- then depends on the mail.

    Cheers..

Not unless I absolutely have to. I find it almost as obnoxious as a group text. The exceptions are if I'm in an email discussion with my editor and also the site owner about an article I'm writing, or when I was an officer in my union local we used to do emergency votes by email. Otherwise, never. Never ever never.

I could probably count the number of times I've hit reply all on one hand, if I could remember them.

Work related all of the time as I administer the company network from my home office and the company has showrooms in all capital cities except Hobart, so staff in all states have to know about things that are happening in IT or about to happen. :cool
Personal only when I am organising a joint function like buying tickets for a concert or going out for dinner and it requires input from several people so all relevant parties are copied in or are addressees. If it is a family party such as a birthday or christmas then we send snail mail with nice cards that we have put some thought into choosing something with an appropriate theme :-D

The reason I ask is that there seem to be those that go for the Reply to All button on emails as their default. In most emails, I just don't get this. In a mass distribution that is just announcing something, do you really have to send out an email to all saying "Thank you!" ???

I guess I am very much in agreement with this statement:
I do realize that there is a place for it. Some work emails and also if social arrangements are being made and everyone needs to be on the same page.

    Ah well good question Laura

And in emails well for me it depends on what I wish to reply too, if the question is all encompassing then reply all, as all may need to reply to my post, but if its a question that is general that I think I need to reply to only the OP then I will reply to the OP only.

I do have to on many occasions need to offline from general multi-user emails need to reply singularly as it may be NDA type replies, that all are not party too.

    Home email then NO,
Work email then = depends on email group that's listed.

NEVER! I am paranoid about who I email.

At one place I worked a guy's wife emailed him about their dog's death. He forgot to put batteries in the invisible fence. "Dog Killer" was the nicest thing she called him.

He wrote a heated reply about "lazy, useless... change your own batteries" and accidentally sent reply all which came up with an error. Probably because there was no all, only the sender. He saw the error and hit "send to all" which was the full company email list - including vendors. I think he meant send all but the CEO did not care what he meant. Many of us stood by him and he got by with a stern reprimand.

Depends on how annoying I want to be. I don't have a reply all button. I have to do it via menu. Too many... accidents.

Yeah, that's definitely one of the dangers of being in the habit of hitting Reply to All...sending things to people you'd rather not send them to.

I adhere to the Sikvik Protocol. I never just automatically "reply to all" on an e-mail. I think it's a lazy practice and, like DOA posted, it can lead to problems.
