    Vista OS installed

Sorry folks I rarely get this frustrated but im not all too happy  Its not everyday that I pay 900$ for a computer and find out that in order to "downgrade" will cost me approximately $290 more, all this said by a sales clerk with a straight face Grrrrrrrr

So my question is this, does anyone know where i can find the software and how i can install it on my computer, i already have a product key so im good in that department :D

Please keep the topic technical and family friendly in the tech forums. General rants can be made in the Lounge, although bad langauge will still not be tolerated there either.

    Thanks :)

If you already have a legit product key, you could ask a friend to let you borrow his/her CD and use your own product key.

Also be sure before you replace Vista with XP, that you round up all the XP drivers for the hardware and burn them to a CD.

Yeah thats my problem right now, xp doesnt recognize about half of my hardware.

Anything I can do to remedy this problem, I'd like to be able to utilize my own computer

So what was the $290 for? If you need help finding drivers, list the specs of the computer and what devices you need drivers for. Can be a hassle at times, some companies don't have XP drivers for there product (Vista only) from what I have heard. Some computer makers won't supply you with drivers if you don't buy the OS from them. Can be a bit frustrating.

Why do you want to downgrade from Vista to XP?

I know alot of people who do that without even ever trying vista. They just buy into all the anti-vista hype.

    A few things

    1. The company i bought the pc from wants $290 CAD for me to purchase the XP software (hell they probably will just give me a recovery disc) and to have a "certified technician" install said software Grrrrr

    2. I have no idea what devices arent being recognized, any idea how i can get that list?

    3. Ive used the winXP OS for 2 yrs, and ive tried vista...im waiting for vista Sp2 before i make any outright nasty comments

So, you do have XP installed now but are missing drivers? Is that right?

If you have a retail PC, post the manufacturer name and model #
Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers. Upload the report as an attachment
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit.

How to check to see if your Device drivers are OK. Use Device Manager:
To open Device Manager: Start>Control Panel> System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
In Device Manager, if there is a ? in front of any devices, that means no driver is installed.
A ! means driver installation attempted but with problems.

Re: Arrrgh! got a new pc and i want to walk up to sillicon valley with something shar

Start with these drivers. This is from an older thread with your motherboard.
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=1062551&postcount=9
    Full thread
Make sure to set a Restore Point.
Make sure to read the driver installation hints.
    Install the chipset drivers first.
The Realtek drivers will possibly give you a problem.
Uninstall any Realtek through Add/Remove Programs BEFORE installing the new ones.

Should be a series and model number on the box somewhere...

If you can't find the model number you may have to track down each driver from the manufacturer. I worked on a Gateway laptop that the Gateway drivers would not work because I did not buy the OS from Gateway. I had to track down each device's driver... Not fun...

If you have to do it that way, SIW http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4387.html was a huge help to identify the componants.

Sorry, but that WebID you posted (WebID: 10097886) shows up as a HP at Future Shop. http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pr...665000FS10097886&catid=10607&logon=&langid=EN

For some reason I can't manuever around the Acer site to get the info I need. Please, upload an Everest report.
A restore point is a copy of the state your PC is in at the time it is set. You can return your PC to that state through System Restore.
You can find it by going to Start>All Programs>Acessories>System Tools, click on System Restore.

Re: Arrrgh! got a new pc and i want to walk up to sillicon valley with something shar

I just checked the download page and the Everest setup.exe does download. I think what this means is that there is no support at the home site. (Limitations: Lavalys has discontinued the free edition. This is unsupported.) The app will still run.
I'm just trying to find your motherboard ID so I can provide the chipset drivers before installing your missing drivers. The info you provided should get me or Fred G there.
Give me a little time and I will get back to you with the things you need.

I still can't move around Acer to get what I'm looking for. I don't want to suggest any drivers, until I know exactly what I'm getting.
Post that Everest report and that will give me the info, i need.
