Think I'm on a loser here but I'll ask anyway. OH and I have shared a monitor, keyboard and mouse for years using a KVM switch. Means a lot less clutter in our 'office', but I've just upgraded my setup and replaced the old 4:3 monitor with a high res widescreen job. But OH said she was having difficulty reading the small text on the default resolution of 1920:1080 so she wants it back to 1280:1024. However if hers is the last system to close down then on next startup my screen comes up on that res too, scrambling my icons and generally being quite a nuisance to have to sort out. And she doesn't like it either as on 1280:1024 her screen gets distorted horizontally.

So is there any way a widesceen monitor can display in 4:3 mode and/or have 'profiles' set for more than one display mode? I think not :(

Have you tried changing the size of your font and leaving the resolution alone? You should also be able to increase the size of any individual site as well using Control and + or - .

    So trying to find some 16:9 ratios that might be acceptable, I found 1408 x 792, 1536 x 864, 1664 x 936, 1792 x 1008. See if any of those helps.
For my senior eyes, I tried different ratios and I also went into Control Panel/Display and changed the size of the text to 125% until I found what works best for me.

Thank you both for the suggestions. It's been a busy day today but tomorrow look more promising. I'll have a play.

Certainly an improvement! The limitations of the onboard graphics on her ageing Acer mean none of those ratios are actually available but 1280:720, another 16:9 ratio, does correct the horizontal stretching that was so annoying her. It does result in less info available though, so more vertical scrolling necessary.

We'll see how it goes and thanks again.

Perhaps a graphics card will stop the nagging. :wine

She's been on it the last hour or so and no complaints - hope it lasts :-D
