    Hi,
I have a small tool which i leave connected to the pc & switch it on when i need to use it.
I switch the unit on then i click on the software on the pc.
Now & then i see a message on the pc screen to say something like "Com port cant be opened etc"
Looking in device manager i switch on the unit then i see it appear under Ports COM & LPT 1
It is loaded as COM 2
I then look on the software "which has a drop down box" but i see its selected COM 1 hence "Com port cant be opened" etc.
Sometimes its the other way around ??
Basically can i just somehow set it to say COM 1 then i dont have to play this game which them.

    Thanks.

You can try to move the Com ports around. In device manager, click the COM port 1, right click and select properities, then Port Settings, then Advanced, move port 1 to 3. Then open the same on COM 2 make it com 1.

    Thanks,
Ive now changed it to 10.
I have also created a shortcut to Device Manager devmgmt.msc
How can i add to this code so Ports COM & LPT automatically open up etc.

Basically i just want to click this shortcut and see if my unit is still port 10 WITHoutout have to then click on the down arrow of Ports COM & LPT.

    Thanks for the advcie.

    Hi,
What will that file do ?
Can i revert back if i need to ?

It will only show which ports have active devices, you can't change or assign any ports.

FYI It's a simple batch file made with Notepad.

Click on it and select Save. Open the saved location and double-click the file.

    Ok,
    Done that.

    Device serial 11 COM2

I followed the advice a post before etc and the item that was playing games i changed to 10
Not sure what 11 is for.

You see ports COM 1 & COM 2. Previously you posted you changed the port to COM 10?

    Firstly, it's Device Serial 0 & 1, not 10 & 11 (COM 1 & 2).
Secondly, is your device assigned port COM 10 working?
And which Windows are you using?

Not your fault, one has to look carefully - initially, I also thought 10 & 11.

This is strange. I'm also using Windows 7, I connected my smartphone (Developer options & USB debugging) and the batch file shows the ports being used.
What do you see in this registry key?
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\SERIALCOMM

Same as what it showed with that black screen just now

Well I can't explain why your COM 10 device isn't showing, not even in the registry!
