    Morning,
I have a small tool that connected to a notebook & was assigned Com3
We have made alterations in the room where this set up lives.
Now when we re-connect the items back up its connected to Com5
We have a labeling system where Com3 is registered all over the place.

My question is please how can i change the tool to be assigned to Com3 as opposed to Com5

    Thanks very much.

Open Device Manager and expand Ports (COM & LPT).
Double-click that device > Port Settings > Advanced:
Next to COM Port Number: you can change it.

If COM3 is in use then someone connected another device to the PC while the device that previously used COM3 was disconnected.
COM ports are not reserved for USB connected devices - Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices also use them.
