Hi. I recently helped a client by removing some viruses (AVG) and spyware (spybot) and thought everything was ok. But he now tells me his internet is painfully slow (10 mins to load a page!?!?) and he always gets a blues screen of death and has to pull the plug to shut down. He has sent me this hijackthis log and I wonder if you experts might be able to find something blatantly wrong with it?

    Thanks in advance. Richard

Please first read guidelines about posting HijackThis logs: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=38752
No logs unless we ask for them and then only post them as an attachment. Also, your HijackThis is out of date. Get the latest version here: HijackThis 1.98.2 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

And then go here and follow these steps: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
Make sure when you run CWShredder you select Fix.

Also, boot in safe mode and:
    - run Ad-aware configured for fullscan: http://www.lavahelp.net/howto/fullscan/index.html Clean what it finds.
    - run SpyBot S&D and clean what it finds.

Are all the Windows Critical Updates installed?

If still having a problem after following the steps in the 35407 link, come back an tell us.

Hello Chaslang and thanks for your reply.

I have now read MajorGeeks advice on virus/spyware removal and think I have been doing most things ok.

One of my problems is that my client lives quite some distance from me and it would not suit either of us if I have to travel this distance to clear something up that wasn't showing at the time of my first visit. So I intend to attempt to use a Remote connection which of course means I won't be able to use safe mode (no network option in ME, I believe?).

In answer to your other question, my client once attempted to carry out a Windows update, but found that he was only a fraction through after 3 hours of downloading - he uses a 56k modem!!
I will attempt all of the programs suggested from my Remote position, and then report back to see how things are.

    Thanks again,
    Richard

Do not forget, Service Pack 2 is due out as early as today, meaning he will have another large update, but this includes enough bug fixes and security updates to help him secure his PC. One problem with spyware removal is that it can rarely be done with a novice because it requires booting into safe mode. From what your saying, your only choice is remote access, you might get lucky, but if you can not remove it, that is your first problem.

Hello Major Attitude and thanks for your reply.

It may not have been that clear, but you will see from my post that my client is running Windows ME, not XP. I believe it is XP that is about to have SP2 released?

The other problem I will of course have with remote access is that the reason he contacted me again was because his internet was so slow!! Life was never meant to be easy!

    Regards
    Richard

Your right, I missed that, sorry. Remote access will still be a problem though, safe mode is required for some removal. Not sure what we can do now, without you being at the PC accessing it from safe mode.

I will try to do as much as I can from normal mode and hopefully give clear enough instruction so that he can carry out the safe mode himself. I might even have to resort to the old-fashioned idea of the telephone!

Thanks, anyway. I will report back with results tomorrow.

    Regards
    Richard
