Asus DVD Codex?

    I can't seem to understand what a codex is, how it gets installed, or where to find the one for my new ASUS DVD Burner. I can burn DVD's, but I can't watch DVD's...what's up with that?

    Hello Blank_Stare, Codec is short for code/decode, think compress/decompress and is how large movie files are made smaller and more manageable. Your media player has to employ the same codec to play a movie file that was originally used to encode or compress the file.     If you are trying to watch burned DVDs using a standalone player and not a computer, they must be converted to a format the DVD player likes.
    What burning program are you using? What is the extension on the DVD?

    Thanks for posting a reply.

    The problem was resolved when I installed the Nero 8 package that came with the drive.

    I make DVDs all the time - usually they have .vob extension, or .bup - if I remember offhand - I don't pay too much attention, I just let the software do it's thing.
