I am in the market for a good College/gaming laptop at the moment, and It's come down to the HP DV9700 and the ASUS M51Sn-X2, now I know the ASUS is a better deal, but can XP Drivers be found for it? That is my main concern. I am almost sure I can get them for the HP, but before I buy anything I want to look into the ASUS machine as well. So does anyone know of any drivers for the M51Sn-X2? Or someplace that I might be able to find them?

    Thanks,
    Josh

I know from experience that drivers for the HP dv9000 series for XP do indeed exist, but I spent about 3 hours online rounding them all up for a dude that erased Vista before he thought about replacing the drivers. I had to go to a Czech site and a Croatian site (??? I think it was Croatian) to get a some of the drivers.... it wasn't easy. I think that if you order either laptop from the manufacturer, you can request XP. I know Dell will still install XP if you force the issue enough during the ordering process, but Dell is also going to completely stop shipping PCs with XP on July 10, 2008 (or so I've heard). So, I think if you make it abundantly clear that you want XP or you will spend your money with a different company, you'll probably get XP installed. If so, be sure to be equally as forceful about getting an XP driver disc, and XP installation disc, and try to get 'em on separate CD's so you don't have an all-in-one 'recovery' CD. A stand-alone XP disc is much more valuable than a factory recovery disc that has all the drivers and software preloaded into the OS...

EDIT- I just went to the Asus web site and couldn't find any notebook PCs with the model number "M51Sn-X2".... however, when I went to the drivers page and looked for it, I did find it. I found it interesting that for most (if not all) of the drivers, the description for each device was listed twice. For example, it says:
    nVidia graphics driver
nVidia graphics driver for Vista 32bit
So I downloaded a couple of these drivers, unzipped 'em, open the .inf's in Notepad, and the 2 or 3 drivers I downloaded ARE XP COMPATIBLE!!! :-D So, I'd recommend downloading all the drivers before buying and and doing what I just did. Download, unzip, and if you can't tell just by looking at the folder contents, open up an .inf or two in Notepad. The top lines of one of the drivers I looked at looks like this:
So, check ALL the drivers before buying.... I have a feeling that you'll be OK ;)

    Good luck!

Wow, thank you so much! I looked at those pages before but never made much of the first listing that didn't have VISTA32 bit next to it. It does indeed look like there are XP drivers in all of those zips as well. So thanks once again for the help. I believe now that I will be going with the ASUS laptop since it's a much better deal than anything I can find at Dell or HP.

As for what you said later on in the page about being able to get XP installed on a machine before it ships to my knowledge(From my uncle who works for HP) they will no longer ship with XP unless it's a business machine. Anyway that doesn't really mean much because getting the XP disc isn't the issue I have. It's the drivers :D But that has been taken care of now.

    Thanks,
    Josh
