Asus mobo problem

    I just purchased an
    Asus M2N32 WS PROFESSIONAL mobo-
    AMD socket AM2 CPU
    DDR2 800/667/533
    System Bus 2000/1600 MT/s
    Dual PCI-E x16 Graphics
    Dual Core CPU Ready
    PCI-X Architecture.
The problem I'm having is the mobo doesn't reconize the DVD/CD drive. How can I get this mobo to do this?

I just downloaded the newest bios and flashed it, this did not help. However, the mobo ask at start up if I want to load raid drivers for the dvd/cd rom drive. I'm confused....
I have tried to switch the cables from the IDE to the EIDE and this did not work either.
I set the switches to master on both drives, & cable select, still no worky.

    Thanks for any help!

You have only one IDE drive (2 points for dvd/cd.
The rest are for sata hard drives sata.
If you have an Ide drive, then that is why it is mixed up.
Have you tried the hard drive as master, and the dvd as slave ?

Looking at the manual there seems to be be nothing unusual in the IDE setup.

Are you also connecting an parallel IDE hard drive and does it recognise this?

That is can you prove that both channels are working on the new board with any old ide drive?
(The manual definitely shows primary nad secondary ide channels at 2 devices per channel.)

For a cd/dvd the setting on p4-15 of the manual should be to disable udma. You are not trying to run it on the same cable as a udma hard drive are you ?

If you wanto run raid,, or get the full benifit of sata hard drives (little extra sppeed in data ) then you probably need the sata driver from asus.
Otherwise it will run in IDE mode, even if you connect a sata drive.
Have you got a sata drive ?

Studiot can tell you better if master/slave with the hard drive and dvd on same cable- setting ide master as auto, and dvd as slave (non udma) will work on this board.
The single cable will be trying to run two different modes, if fitted that way.

does this mean there should be a cd/dvd listing in the main tab to be able to diable the udma? or do I disable it under the primary hd?

Firstly prove that the motherboard is actually working by connecting ONLY ONE IDE device (a hard drive configured as master) and seeing it recognised in BIOS.

Do this for each of the two IDE channels.

If this does not work get a refund/replacement board.

Then post a list of the ide devices you want to connect to the mobo and we will advise further.

    Finally READ the manual.

I missed the obvious, as there waere 2 diagrams on the motherboard ide connections, and only looked at the first:eek:
Anyway, I saw Studiot sorted that out, and hid in the corner;)
I will ask what os you are installing XP, or, Vista ?

If you are using Vista this dvd problem could be a point.
You might need to update the bios, if you are.

Thanks for staying on top of this with me.

I tried the suggestion of running the dvd rom as a slave to the HD and it worked, it is plugged into the pri_ide slot. Sorry, running XP media center '05.

The pri_EIDE should see the dvd rom right? Here's whats interesting about that slot. It will recongnize the dvd player only when I have a switch in the bios for the marvell controller turned on. When this is done, it wants to config the dvd rom as a raid config.

I tried the HD in the pri_EIDE slot and the bios did not recognize it.

I dumped vista because it's to much a resorce hog. I tried to install suse linux os, but it says i don't have a HD. confused But, XP works fine on it.
Do you think the pri_EIDE is for running dual os at the same time, and I can only piggy back the cd/dvd rom off the hd's? ( did that make any sense?)

    Thanks for the help Studiot,
I have READ the manual. It needs more info for me & dumbed up quite a bit . I connected to both the ide & eide channels. It only recongnized the hd in the ide channel. It does recognize the dvd rom in the eide channel if I have the marvell controller on, and it wants to config it as a raid.

I piggyed the dvd rom of the hd and it's working for now.

    Glad you are making progress.

I would recommend getting one operating system running properly first. Whilst you are doing this we will look into the details you have reported.
The normal rule for dual booting is install the oldest operating system first and newest last. This is because each installation makes entries to the master boot record and the newest will recognise the older, but not the other way round.

How big is the hard drive?

Just the 250 GB is enuf.

I am not a linux specialist, perhaps Adrynalyne can offer some dual boot advice since he is posting in this thread?

    You said:-
It will recongnize the dvd player only when I have a switch in the bios for the marvell controller turned on.

Now if you were installing Vista, this is something that it does, but in XP, -that's a new one.

For dual booting, Studiot has directed you - Get one running nicely, first.
Oldest system first will work with least problems, at least in Windows systems.
If you want to run Lynux, with Windows , go to the linux forum, on majorgeeks, and check through faq's--as there are commands that you can use with Linux to overcome difficulties, before you do it.
