I have an older computer with a ASUS P34X/533-U MB running XP Pro.

I know it's old but I need this computer for the moment because there is some older software that will not run on my new Win7 x 64.

It has now developed a problem....If I look in Device Manager > Network adaptors > 1394 Net adaptor > Intel (R) PRO/1000 PM Network Connection has the yellow exclamation mark to show there is a problem.

I can't connect to the internet on this computer which I ungently need to do so I can download a Activesync update so I can sync my mobile PDA.

Any advice on what/how/where to go would be appreciated.

Just double click on the Intel (R) PRO/1000 PM and a box will open. Hit the Driver tab at the top and you will see an Update Driver buttom which you should select.

This will then open the install driver box to which the Automatic install should be fine as the Intel driver required will almost certaily have been installed from the XP cd.

As always it is best to image partitions prior to messing about.

    Good Luck

Thanks, I tried that and it didn't work, seems it might be a bit more than just a driver problem.

I also had this problem with a board recently, no matter what I did the on board LAN adapter would not
work under windows or linux so I just stuffed a 10/100 PCI LAN card in it and that worked first time.
You could also get a USB to RJ45 network adapter if you cant get it to work.

Also try removing it from the list, right click on it and hit uninstall then restart and let windows re install it

Have you tried voodoo's fix yet? Before moving forward try it then report back EXACTLY what happens.

When you computer starts hit del and enter the bios,go into onboard devices or similar 'you may have to look around a bit' and make sure firewire, lan and gigalan are enabled and all intel and network devices are enabled, save and exit.

Make sure windows is updated to the latest service pack and all additional updates are installed.

You may not have or are trying to install the wrong driver so I'd recommend using Intel's auto update.

At the end of the day the possibility exists that this piece of hw has gone bad in some way.

voodoo3rd has stated that he had similar issues with this card and was unable to get it to work under Linux. If the card does not work under Linux then to my eyes this would place card failure at the top of my list.

That's the conclusion I'm coming to so now off to the computer store to see if they have a PCI card on the shelf, and will come back to let everyone know the outcome.

Went to the computer store where it was built in 2006 and took the computer with me.

The guys there are great they had a quick look declared the fix would be a new Network card and installed it there and then $20.

Back home, all up and running again.

Thanks again everyone for the help....When you're stumbling around in the dark with a problem it's always comforting to have someone with you.
