This is the audio driver for that board from ASUS
Realtek ALC883 Audio Driver WHQL V5.10.0.5391 for Windows XP & 64bit XP.

    Realtek can be stubborn.
You might want to follow through these steps and perform any that you are able to, before installing your driver.

    1) Uninstall the Realtek software through Add/Remove Programs (if it's installed but not working)
    2) In Device Manager, remove the High Definition audio device (or the unknown device, if there is one) under Sound, Video & Game controllers.
    3) Go into Device Manager>System, right click the UAA Hi-Def Bus driver.
Disable the device and then uninstall it. (Do not re-boot yet)
    KB888111
If you install, remove, and then re-install this update, the update is no longer listed in Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. Therefore, you cannot remove this update from your computer. To work around this problem, follow these steps.
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP2\KB888111 (may be in SP3)
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    4. Click Yes, and then exit Registry Editor.
Run CCleaner, both the Cleaner and Registry.

Install your driver, then do a complete shut down and re-boot.

These are the steps I usually follow to get these things out of the way as problems.
    Check: Speakers connected?
Check: Master Volume control. (not muted)
Check: Windows Audio Service is started.
Check: Device Manager for bad drivers.
Check: Why is the driver missing? Re-installed OS? Malware? Corrupt file? Deletion?
Check: Are you getting error messages? What is the message?
Check: Your audio mixer software (if installed) for a setting that mutes back panel audio if you have plugged headphones into a front panel audio solution. Uncheck: this setting to allow audio to both the back and front.
Check: BIOS to insure on-board sound is enabled.
Install: the correct Chipset and Audio drivers.

After that there are a few things to try but the most important is having your system clean of Realtek before installing the drivers.
I know you already installed the chipset drivers.
Make sure to check those other things, just to be sure they are set right.
Post what you see in Device Manager under Sound, Video, Games.
After that we can get into some of the other fixes and maybe get you sound.

Is this a new motherboard or used?

Brand new 3 days out of the box, here's what is in device manager under sound video and game controllers.

    Audio Codecs
    Legacy Audio Drivers
    Legacy Video Capture Devices
    Media Control Devices
    Video Codecs
    heck: Speakers connected? Yes
Check: Master Volume control. (not muted) Check
Check: Windows Audio Service is started. HUH?
Check: Device Manager for bad drivers. 4, and they are mentioned in the previous post.
Check: Why is the driver missing? Re-installed OS? Malware? Corrupt file? Deletion? All parts of comp are brand new, couldn't be malware. Fresh install of XP.
Check: Are you getting error messages? What is the message? YES!!! here is the message

windows media player can not play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly

Check: Your audio mixer software (if installed) for a setting that mutes back panel audio if you have plugged headphones into a front panel audio solution. Uncheck: this setting to allow audio to both the back and front.
Check: BIOS to insure on-board sound is enabled. It is enabled
Install: the correct Chipset and Audio drivers. I installed them right off the cd

When I tried your original advice, there was stuff in add or remove programs that I couldn't delete. You said to uninstall KB888111, it was in add or remove programs, but it can not be deleted.

    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.
    Try this:
    KB835221 Hotfix
    1. Remove "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus"
    2. Download from Microsoft the KB835221 hotfix and install it
    KB835221.exe
    3. Restart the system, and XP will automatically detect the devices
    4. After this you should be able to install Realtek drivers.

And lastly, perform this if you still haven't gotten your driver installed, yet.

Go into the BIOS and disable the onboard audio.
Boot into Safe Mode and go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the Realtek software.
Reboot back into your BIOS and enable the onboard audio.
Boot back into Windows (normal) and cancel the Hardware Wizard.
    Now try the install again.

There is one last thing to try, but give these a try first. If they don't work, I will post the last trick I know.
If that doesn't work ASUS may be right, the sound chip could be bad. (On a new board?)

I didn't try the second thing you listed because of the following:

1, there are 2 things in my add remove programs list now, one is KB888111, the other is the hotfix you told me to install. Is this correct?

    2. Did as first set of instructions said. Did not get Device manager to see the device. Not sure if I should try to install drivers for something that "Isn't there"

    Any thoughts?

Yes, that should be right. Go ahead and try installing the audio driver now. You wouldn't see the device in Device Manager because it wouldn't be installed yet. It might show as an unknown device.

    AHHHHH!!!!

Here's something VERY interesting. Review my post, I told you that there were 4 things showing up in device manager as being uninstalled. They were Primary IDE Primary IDE Secondary IDE and Secondary IDE.

I disabled the onboard audio, and meant to boot into safe mode. FORGOT TO!!! In device manager These are now showing as installed!? WTF if I go back and enable the audio, they go back to being unistalled. Could this be the problem?

Weird. I've never seen that before. IDE's are the hard drives and shouldn't have anything to do with Audio being enabled or disabled in BIOS, unless there is some strange connection issues. (I know very little about hardware) That is something you might want to post back in the other thread in Hardware. (I had this one moved to Drivers so there wouldn't be any confusion.)

One suggestion I have, would be to disable one Primary and one Secondary while in Device Manager. Then get the onboard sound enabled again and see if that makes a difference.
It looks like this may not be a driver issue at least an audio one.

did the disabling and stuff, even powered down and unhooked all IDE stuff, no luck. What's up?

We've gotten to a very weird point. I don't understand why enabling your sound is causing problems with the IDE's.
    I have only 3 suggestions.
    1) Reinstall the IDE drivers
    OR
    2) Run sfc /scannow
Insert your XP disc and close the Auto-Start, if it opens.
Go to Start>Run, type cmd into the text box, press Enter
Type sfc /scannow in the Command window, press Enter
That will repair corrupt or missing Windows files without affecting personal data
    OR
    3) Do a Repair install of XP (see attachment) This could affect files, so you may want to back them up, if you have any yet.

I'm not sure any of those will work. Like I said I have never seen this situation. This might be something to do with Hardware.
