Hi everyone, I've been trying to figure out a very aggravating problem, and so far, I've come up empty. So I'm hoping someone here can confirm what I'm dreading, or provide some insight into my dilemma, lol.

I have an Asus P5Q3 Deluxe/Wifi AP @n with some buggy USB ports. ALL USB devices connected to the ports are functioning properly, but when I try to connect a thumb drive to any of the 10 USB 2.0 ports, The drive is said to be corrupt and need formatting. If I remove the drive (by ejecting it first, always), and try it in one of my other machines, the thumb drives are not corrupt and work fine AFTER an error check and fix by windows.

So I've come to the conclusion that the drives are not corrupt, but rather that my USB controller is not reading the drives properly. I'm dreading the fact that it might be possible that my USB controller has started dying, but I dont know much about USB controllers, and I need confirmation of that.

This issue is a fairly recent one, the machine was working fine since it's birth, and this only started happening within the last couple of months. At first it only happened once in a while, and an error scan and fix would solve the issue. But now, whenever I connect a thumb drive to a USB port on the machine, it asks to format it first, and the drives are not corrupt and do not need formatting.

I have check my drivers so many times I cant remember, I have completely done a fresh install of windows, and fresh drivers, I have tried everything I know, and still the problem persists... Is my USB controller dead?

    Thanks for your time...

First, I would check ASUS' website to see if there is a BIOS update available for your board.

From there, you have two choices: If the board is under warranty (and you don't mind tearing the system apart), you could contact ASUS' tech support and see if a new board (RMA) might fix the problem.

Alternately, you could buy and install an internal USB card and see if it solves the problem (look for one that has a connection for the front USB ports as well, if possible).

    Hope this helps. :)

I've already flashed to the most current BIOS for my board, version 2105, and I've tried backtracking through every other version since the board was released.

It's a 4 year old LGA 775 board, I'm guessing its past its warranty period, and even if its not, I doubt I could find my original receipt for it any more. :-D

The internal USB card was an option I was considering, but I wasnt sure it a faulty USB controller (or whatever my problem is) would affect the new card once installed, leaving me in the same predicament I'm in now. However, for the price of USB 2.0 PCI cards, its definately worth a try, thanks Gman863 :)
