    Turn off the PC.
Press and hold the F2 key and press the power button. Don't release the F2 key until the BIOS screen displays.

I turned off pc. held down the f2 key and turned on pc. Keep on holding f2 for 5 minutes with no results.

So the BIOS screen never appears?
You only see a request for a password?
If that is the case, it sounds like you need a BIOS password and not simply a user login password.

Take the computer back to the place you purchased it. A new computer should not have a BIOS password request screen.

I took the computer back to Best Buy and they want almost $100 to send it out. If I told them I need a bios password they will probably laugh at me. I would take it back but the 14 day return policy
is up and I don't think they will give me a bios password. Thank for trying to help me.

    Greetings Rodwell,
To my understanding the one way you can delete the BIOS information is by disconnecting the internal CMOS battery for a couple / five minutes {perhaps even ten!}and then replacing it. It is not a simple process with a Asus x540la as it is positioned on the wrong side of the Motherboard. I have been looking for a description for your model and the best I could find was:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Asus+X551CA+CMOS+Battery+Replacement/24938

Perhaps someone else can point you towards more accurate directions.
    Goosd luck,
    s.

This video shows how to get into the Asus and how to remove the Motherboard. It doesn't show the difficulty of putting it back together.

Apparantly this method doesn't work for Asus machines. I think the best bet is to bite your lip and send it back.
    Sorry.

    Resetting the BIOS wont help.

I did some further investigation and have to agree.
Something of a pity but it does mean that stolen laptops cannot be reconditioned...

Hello again Rodwell, I think I was running ahead of myself earlier.
If at the moment your daughter's laptop runs into the Windows 10 login screen then there may be ways of helping.
What I need to know is what happens when you start up the machine and as you do so keep tapping on the F12 button?
I'm sorry to have to put you through this again but I want to see if you can open the boot manager at Boot up. This should be possible if you are running Windows 10.
If You can get the pc to boot manager I have some suggestions.

When I turn it on and tap the f12 key, or the f2 key for a split second I can see the word asus and then the enter password comes up. I have done this at lease 20 times.

I have contacted Asus and the only help they will give me is if I send them the labtop. (M0ney) Thank you for trying to help.

    Thank you again for responding.
What I would like to know is does the passsword request happen immediately or do you get as far as the Windows 10 login screen?
If the laptop does get as far as the Windows 10 login screen then there might be a possibility of changing /hacking some of the other icons that are on the screen and changing them to a 'Command prompt'.
It is quite a complicated process that I have not actually done but could try and point you towards the directions.
    Perhaps my ealier advice was right. viz;
    If I can help...

From the description, it sounds like it is a BIOS and not a Windows password.

    Stephen
This was answered in the first post.
    and again in post #19
I still say take it back to where it was purchased. The BIOS should not require a password on a 4 week old laptop. Have them fix it free or give you a replacement laptop.

Thank you plodr, I do agree. I would certainly hope to...
Which is absolutely my preferred suggestion.
    Best wishes,
