    Hi ya,

some of my sound has gone on pc, I can still listen to cds, movies but my windows xp sounds are no longer working i.e. startup, error sounds etc,,someone suggested it could be something with the drivers on ASUS. Can someone help me out here as Ive noticed people listing ASUS P2 or P4, where do i find this info on my pc?

    thanks

I got the info (i think) regarding the ASUS missing numbers from a link via major geeks. the details are:

Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P4SP-MX REV 1.xx
    Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: Award Software, Inc. ASUS P4SP-MX ACPI BIOS Revision 1005 09/05/2005

now do i need to install drivers for ASUSTeK Computer INC. P4SP-MX REV 1.xx, to regain my XP sound back?

Not likely a driver problem, if you had no sound that might indicate driver issues, what have you deleted, or programs installed or uninstalled, do you have a startup manager on your pc?

ermmm "a what?" (im sorry if that sounded nasty but I dont have a clue what a startup manager is)

Its been like this for a few months, so I couldnt possibly tell you what Ive deleted, what I can tell you is,,,when I had a problem before with the sound I took it to a shop to have new sound card installed, when I got it home the technician had accidently left a cd disc in the dvd drive, I made a copy of it as its 'motherboard manuals, Audio+Video drivers' disc. When the sound went again (my present problem) someone looked at the files on the cd i cheekily copied and said the files on there were different to whats inside the pc, but the technician ONLY used that after he had put the sound card in its slot. Does this make any sense to you or anybody?

A startup manager is a program where you can turn off things that you dont need on startup, yes that makes sense being you have a sound card installed, it takes different drivers than the onboard sound that came on your pc, you can reinstall the driver on the cd and see if it helps.

Double check in the control panel > sound and audio devices > sounds tab > and under Program Events if you highlight a sound do any of the sounds play ok , plus check on the drop down Sound Schemes menu that Windows Default is chosen?

well last night when I attached the sound card back into the pc, the listed name in the audio, sound (in device manager) was creative sound. This morning when I switch pc back on (still no sound) the listed device name was SBPCI (WDM), at the moment, because there are still no system sounds (can't even get the speaker volume icon in taskbar!) im following instructions in troubleshoot. Will let you know if anything works (by end of year at this rate)
