Athlon 1Ghz or Duron 1.3Ghz?

I have an Athlon 1Ghz 200 Fsb processor at the moment, my motherboard supports up to a Duron 1.3GHz,
Would it be worthwhile upgrading to the Duron or would I not notice much difference in speed?

 

I don't think you'd notice much of a difference. Perhaps you could upgrade your RAM? What are your full system specs?

 

I'll second that.

It's been my experience that an updgrade that doesn't come close to doubling the CPU clock speed isn't really worth doing unless you upgrade other subsystems at the same time. A 30% improvement in the CPU clock rate alone would be barely noticeable.

While you may have speeded up the processor, there are so many other bottlenecks that also slow a machine down that the improvement in the CPU clock rate gets lost in the clutter unless the clock rate improvement is large.

For instance -- potential bottlenecks that aren't necessarily improved by a faster CPU can include

• hard drive data transfer rates
• memory access speeds
• chipset timings
• data bus transfer rates
• ... and others.

Much more important is how much memory do you have and what operating system you are running on your system (since this may use a lot of your basic resources).

Full spec of the machine would really help if you want to know if it's worth upgrading.

 

My system is a gigabyte Ga-7ixeh mainboard with 512 mb sdRam, 133mhz, my hard drive is 40gig, 7200rpm, the fsb of the mainboard is 200mhz and I am running xp home edition and ay the moment I have an Athlon 1ghz processor.
