Athlon XP 2600+ overheating?

So far I've tried 3 different motherboards and 2 heatsinks (stock and an Aerocool from Circuit City), but the BIOS temperature is always sky high for the CPU. Its usually around 55 - 57 c and climbs up to the upper 60s at which point I shut it off.

I don't know why this is happening... the heatsink is on properly and I'm using thermal paste.

Its the 266Mhz 2600, not the 333 and now I'm using an Asus A7V600-X motherboard.

Is the CPU faulty? I just bought it last week (OEM packaging, so it may have been used for all I know).

Thats pretty much the heat it produces, nothing wrong with it. Those cores are the thick 110nm production chips and not the newer 90nm that xp 3200+ were made out of.

This Thread should probably be in the cooling section.

Alot of factors contribute to CPU temps.
Is your Thermal paste Brand name? Artic Silver or Ceramic is about the best.
How you apply is Important, dont want too much either.
When applying clean cpu & heatsink with Isopropyl acohol, dont touch surface with finger's oil from skin wont help.
If your heatsinks had thermal pads it must be removed when using thermal paste.
Room temp can affect Temps, it get's hot in Florida!
Case cooling/Case Airflow is Big factor! Cool air in usually from front lower part of case, Hot air out the upper back of case, equal amount of air in & out.
What kind of case ya got? Do you have any case fans?
Is your CPU running at stock speeds?

    Motherboard isnt really a factor.
Amd Xp cpu's probably wont Die till about 85c, (Yours must be a Semprom?? dont know die temp off hand, maybe same?) but upper 50's/60's is hot at least for XP cpu.

My old xp 3000+ 110nm chip ran at 67c with stock cooling and a decent case. I believe XPs died when you hit 95c, but don't quote me on that.

You might also have a bad thermal sensor on your mobo. My BIOS recorded my 2600+ (which I still have) as being idle at mid-50s C. This was really high, I thought, and then i installed Soyo's motherboard monitor, which showed the same 2600+ at 52C at full load.

For that Processor Amd says 85C is max temp. Is your heatsink copper or aluminnum, are those temps idle and lload you are okay but it def could be cooler how many case fans do you have and do you have good wire managment

The case is some $30 case I got from a computer store, but its pretty decent. It has a side intake and I installed a rear exhaust under the PS. There's nothing in the case except for a CD-ROM drive (I'm currently using Knoppix for testing purposes until I can transfer my hard drives to this computer). As a video card I have a really really old PCI S3 Virge installed (AGP is 1.5v only and the only 1.5v card I have is my 9600XT which I'm using in this computer).

The heatsink compound is pretty evenly spread out and it came with the Aerocool heatsink. Its the silver type. No thermal pads, no tape. I'm using an Aerocool X-Raider which is made out of aluminum and has an 80mm fan. Before, I had been using a stock AMD heatsink with an 80mm fan mounted to it via an adapter.

My room temp is probably around mid 70s.

    Blacktop Roland,

THREE different motherboards from different manufacturers have indicated this high temperature: a Gigabyte, Chaintech, and the Asus.

This high temperature has alarmed me since I'm an intel user and I'm used to 50c MAX on my P4 :)

Sorry for putting this here instead of in cooling. I don't come here often and failed to look for a cooling section.

My idle system temps. Room temp 75.2f - 24c. All air-cooled. Dont change much from that after a few hours of CoD or what have ya.

Airflow is key man. Maybe you've created a vacuum inside your case? Got a pic of the inside of your case?

maybe a bad job on the thermal paste.

I'm thinking the heatsink isnt contacting the core properly,it cant give off that much heat and still work slightly,a good way to check is to use a huge blob of heatpaste,or let your comp idles in bios if its really running at those temps when you touch the heatsink it should feel really warm to the touch,it may burn you if it dont,it feels cold to the touch the hsf isnt taking the heat away from the cpu :)

I'll remove and reinstall it again, but damn... i find it hard to believe that I've installed two different heatsinks (one with a thermal pad) improperly atleast 5 times

glock any chance you can post a few photos of the bottom of the heatsinks and top of the cpu, also a picture of the mobo mounting bracket assembly :)

Edit why not try what I said in my previous post?

    G_Loc Private E-2

I'd post a pic of those things... but I just reinstalled everything, lol

Eh, I just took off the heatsink and applied more thermal past and its still hot as elephant poop. 30 seconds in the BIOS and it was in the 50s

The heatsink was hot?elephant excrement cant be much over 35 degrees thats pretty cool.lol

    haha

Well the boot version of Windows loaded up fine... hmm

The heatsink is hot, but I can leave my fingers on there for a good 15 seconds before I gotta move my hand

  18. G_Loc

    G_Loc Private E-2

    Lame

It made it up to 82c before i shut it off. The heatsink was feeling rather hot, lol

I'm about to take a hammer to the CPU and turn it into sand.

On another note... the BIOS is indicated a core voltage of 1.85... Isn't it supposed to be 1.65????

  19. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

Quick check it should be at 1.65 lower it,you wont hurt anything!

  20. G_Loc

For some reason the BIOS isn't letting me lower it... boo!

i'll work on it some more tomorrow... its time to get wasted

BTW,is there an enable manual adjustment of cpu voltages and frequencies option?

1.85v that ill make it hot!

Looking at your picture, it appears you can add a fan to the front of your case.
You also mentioned you have side fan, most that come with generic cases are of poor quality (PSUs too), which direction is it blowing?

Also looks like some cable management is needed.

That PSU ya got, does it have a fan above your cpu, ones that do are better for AMD cpu's.

  24. G_Loc

    G_Loc Private E-2

When I bought the case, the side fan was sucking air out. I changed it to blow in.

    No fan above the CPU.

This case is only temporary as I'm going to drop all this stuff into the one I'm currently using for my P4.

For some reason I cannot change the voltage. The BIOS gives me the option to do so, but the only option in there is 1.85v

  25. G_Loc

    G_Loc Private E-2

    Bump bump...

Think this motherboard might be defective since I cannot change the voltage? or maybe the CPU is bad?

What is the brand & Model of the MOBO your using?

  27. G_Loc

Someone on the AMD boards pointed out that some thermal compound may have found its way onto the laser etching on the CPU and shorted some bridges. He said when that happens, the default voltage rises up to 1.85v

I'm cleaning up the CPU as we speak
