ATI driver updates and TV capture problem

asus p4s800d-e deluxe; 1024 MB; Intel p4 northwood 3.2 GH; latest BIOS/drivers
lots of cooling, 380 vac antec ps
ati aiw 9800 128M pro; ccc 5.6, mmc 9.08
either audigy z2 or onboard sound
wdc1200jb; Samsung 120GB sata; both 80% empty and defragged
Samsung Syncmaster 173p using dvi; MS wireless elite kbd, mouse (USB);
USB printer, etc, etc.
xp sp2, avg antivirus, ms anti-spy,spysweeper,zone alarm,winpatrol,spybot,adaware,etc

Updating ati drivers (following ati's instructions to the letter) has resulted in tv capture hanging after about 5-15 minutes. Task manager can't end task unless I wait about a half hour. I can run all other programs during hang, but screen area used by tv is not refreshed with desktop after any new window is closed. If I try to change resolutions during hang I get bsod with ati2dvag looping after several c-a-d's. These symptoms occur regardless of the number of background processes/services loaded at boot.

I've tried several other forums, googled all over and even resorted to ati "support" with no luck. I need the new drivers in order to run Splinter Cell:CT properly or I wouldn't care. Dr watson, event viewer, process viewer haven't helped. Can anyone?

Do you have an older version of Multimedia Center that you could try? I know ATI took a lot of the older ones off and removed the "Record" feature. If you do, see if the older one works out better for you. Also try a clean uninstall and reinstall of the tv drivers. As a side note, I see that you have Audigy Z2 or onboard sound... do you have the onboard disabled?
