My apologies for the double post. My previous thread answered the Qs about which utility to use, now I am trying to get to the "how".

So far you guys have been awesome - I truly appreciate your guidance and patience.

here's where I am: I have the HD, and the dock. I have DLed and installed both Macrium and Acronis (more on why in a moment).

    This HD http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...SD-500AS7 SY
    This case/dock http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...p?Sku=T13-5026

I first tried Macrium. I can get through to the disk image wizard just fine. When I am prompted to select a drive to write to, the new drive is not there. Thinking it might be a glitch in the freeware, I did the same with Acronis, same result.

Looking at 'My computer' I do not see the new drive as listed. Device manager shows the USB/ATA adapter and lists the new drive as a USB storage device. Looking at the dropdowns in Acornis and Macrium, the drive is not shown in any fashion.

Looking in Disk Management, I show "Drive 2" is there, showing online and unallocated, MBR

    What step am I missing?

I get 404 errors for both your addresses. So, no one wishing to look can see your HD nor external case.

Is the new drive as large as your original? In order to clone a drive, the new one must be the same size or larger.

I suspect your new hd has to be formatted so the label changes from unallocated.

Find your other thread and in that one, I can see the 500GB Seagate and the Coolmax enclosure.

Yes, same size HD as original. 500G seagate. I only have the external enclosure as a means to the end: firing up the new HD and cloning from the old one.

I know I am on level 100 questions for you guys. but some guidance on formatting the drive would be most appreciated

OK - here's where we are: I managed to get the new drive formatted. Used macrium to image the old drive to the new one. removed the old HD, inserted new one. Comp will not boot - getting a failure and request to insert the system disc.

Went into the setup and boot menus, the drive is found and recognized. Where did I go wrong?

Also - When I reinstalled the old drive, put the new one back as an external to look at the file - I have the MACRIUM disk partition image there.

So did I do something wrong when i cloned? confused as usual

And as usual all help is appreciated

    TIA

advancing but still needing assistance. Figured out I need to restore from the image.

When I select the image, then go to the 'select partition to overwrite - I dont have the option to jsut restore the disk from itself...the partitioning is not allowing it. Very confused, hoping for help. Read the macrium tutorials, still confused.

Sorry, I have never used Macrium. My experience is limited to an old version of Ghost and several versions of Acronis True Image.
I also have never replaced one hd for another. My experience has been limited to restoring an image from both disks and an external image to an internal hd when the computer(s) had major problems and in some cases would not boot from the internal hd.

I am not familiar with either of those programs. I have cloned and replace several hard drives using XXClone. http://majorgeeks.com/XXCLONE_d5534.html

I have cloned internal hard drives, and drives via USB with no issues. You pick a target and source drive, clone it, then make the target bootable. (Is an option easily found in the XXClone software) Good luck whichever way you go.

I am sure someone will have some experience with the programs you are using.
