attribute 128 of file 9

windows xp. system ran fine till i downloaded some pictures from a data card for my niece. now everytime i restart chkdsk runs, stage 1&2 are fine then security descriptors finds a unreadable data stream it tries to rewrite but says" unable to write attribute 128 of file 9". system then finish's boot and runs fairly well except for some minor display issues(display is partially blacked out in header area). help!!!!!!

 

At the command prompt you could try:

chkdsk c: /r

See if that changes anything.

 

i am not getting a comand prompt,this is all running automaticly at start.what should i run to get there? tried copy/paste "chkdsk c: /r" in run box but it says chckdsk is in use and asks if i want to run on start up. i checked n and window closed.

 

Do it again, this time say yes. It should reboot and run a 5 stage chkdsk, instead of the 3 stage one.

 

pasted chkdsk c: /r and said y restarted comp. and it started 5 stage check got to 3rd stage and same results "unable to write to attribute 128 of file 9".

 

Did it continue to stage 4 and 5? Or just quit?

 

on start up 5 stage chkdsk gave error message after 3rd stage it then quit and reran chkdsk 3 stage which also gave same error message at 3rd stage. if i skip chkdsk on start up system seems to run better(no blanks in upper task bar of IE, )
